The League to Save Lake Tahoe is searching for an experienced environmental problem solver to apply science and technical information toward policy development and effective advocacy campaigns to achieve its mission to Keep Tahoe Blue. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to integrate science, technology and innovation in environmental and community progress for a national treasure, Lake Tahoe. This individual will serve as an integral part of the League’s Policy Team and must be comfortable working on complex and contentious issues while representing the League in a professional manner at public meetings, working groups and with decision makers at all levels of government. Someone who is both self-starting and a team player while possessing exceptional and persuasive written and oral communication skills will thrive in this creative and fast-paced work environment. Professional experience in the natural sciences, environmental management, policy development and/or collaborative negotiation is essential for success in this position.

What the position involves:

  • Participate as a key member of the League’s Policy Team by:
    • Developing policy strategies and priorities as well as implementing projects to further the League’s position on the following topics;
      • Accelerated restoration of streams, meadows and other sensitive lands in the Tahoe Basin
      • Improved management of aquatic invasive species, particularly at the Tahoe Keys
      • Climate change mitigation and adaptation.
    • Supporting the design and implementation of other advocacy campaigns through the incorporation of best available science and research.
  • Represent the League and actively participate in science and technical working groups by advocating for League priorities and programs, including at relevant regulatory hearings, agency and community meetings and other decision-making forums.
  • Meet with local, state and federal policy-makers to advance League priorities.
  • Review relevant planning, technical, environmental assessment and policy documents and provide thorough overview to League leadership as well as recommendations on advocacy actions to achieve League priorities.
  • Provide oral comment at public meetings.
  • Draft and review League comment letters and policy briefs.
  • Increase the League’s presence in the science community by identifying partnerships and projects for League involvement.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Masters Degree in relevant field.
  • At least five years of professional experience in applied science, environmental policy and/or project management with proven ability to set and accomplish ambitious objectives.
  • Strong background in water quality, soil conservation, resource management or equivalent science.
  • Strategic, creative thinker, able to see the big picture and set priorities, take initiative to create opportunities and obtain results.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment requiring advanced critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent public speaking and advocacy skills. Must be comfortable and confident speaking in front of large groups of people.
  • Concise and persuasive technical writing skills.
  • Excellent time-management and problem-solving skills; ability to manage multiple issue campaigns, projects and staff simultaneously. Exercise organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Flexibility in scheduling and willingness to travel to and attend frequent public meetings in and around the region that may include evenings and weekends.
  • Possess professionalism, team leadership skills, collaborative spirit and creative energy.


  • Familiarity with Lake Tahoe environmental and policy issues and community dynamics.
  • An interest and passion for environmental conservation and the League’s mission to protect, restore, and advocate for the ecosystem health and scenic appeal of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
  • Established relationships with organizations and individuals working in the Lake Tahoe science fields.
  • Familiarity with GIS programs and applications.

League specific requirements:

  • Employees are required to have a vehicle that is in good working order, proof of valid driving license, non-expired vehicle registration and effective insurance coverage. Travel around Basin, Bay Area, Reno and Sacramento may be required.
  • Position requires some physical activity such as bending, stooping, carrying and lifting up to 25 pounds.
