Intent of the process

Please Note: This process has been designed to have two (2) different job streams in one advertisement. There are merit criteria specific to one or all stream(s); please review them carefully.

The two streams are:
1. Aquatic Science Technician (EG-03, 04, 05)
2. Molecular Biology Technician (EG-04, EG-05)

This is an anticipatory process to fill potential positions in St. John’s, Corner Brook, and Bishop’s Falls, Newfoundland and Labrador. A pool of fully-qualified candidates and a partially qualified pool of candidates may be created to fill these positions, as well as similar or lower level positions, on a term, indeterminate, or acting basis. This pool may be used to staff other EG positions within the Science branch.

FOR BOTH STREAMS

Education:
Successful completion of a program from a recognized post-secondary institution in a field of natural, physical or applied science, resource management, engineering or other program relevant to the duties of the position,

Degree equivalency

EG-03 and EG-04 Only
Experience in the operation or maintenance of field or laboratory equipment.

Note: Experience is defined as at least 1 year of performing similar tasks.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:
NOTE: Due to operational needs asset qualifications may be used to determine the selection of candidates for the interview process.

Education:
Stream 1 – Aquatic Science Technician (all locations):

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with an acceptable specialization in biology, applied science, environmental science, resource management or conservation science.

Stream 2: Molecular Biology Technician (St. John’s only):

Post-graduate degree from a recognized university in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in a field relevant to the duties of the position.

Degree equivalency

Experience:

Stream 1 – Aquatic Science Technician (all locations):

Experience preparing, imaging, and/or reading salmonid scales or otoliths for ageing purposes.

Experience transporting, launching and operating small motorized boats.

Experience tagging organisms and/or experience in the use of radio or acoustic telemetry techniques

Experience troubleshooting scientific equipment or software for the acquisition of data for scientific studies.

Experience in the use of modern technologies in scientific data collection. Examples may include using thermographs, hydrophones, sonar imaging tools, imaging scopes, UAVs, etc.

Experience working with, handling, or caring for live aquatic organisms in the laboratory or in the field and/or collecting scales or samples from live aquatic species

Stream 2: Molecular Biology Technician (St. John’s only):

Experience with DNA/RNA extraction, quantification, PCR/qPCR, sequencing.

Experience ordering and maintaining stock of laboratory supplies and reagents.

Experience maintaining sensitive laboratory equipment.

Experience maintaining an inventory of biological samples.

Experience compiling, analyzing, and interpreting scientific data for the preparation of project reports and scientific papers.

Experience providing technical support for scientific field or laboratory projects relating to aquatic organisms or environments.

EG-03 Only
Experience in the collection of scientific data.

EG-03 Only
Experience in the inputting of scientific data using computer software (for example MS Excel)

EG-05 Only
Experience planning logistics and providing technical support for scientific field or laboratory projects relating to aquatic organisms or environments.

EG-04 and EG-05 Only:
Experience in the collection and quality control of scientific data

EG-04 Only:
Experience in the inputting and processing of scientific data using computer software (for example R, MS Excel, MS Access).

EG-05 Only:
Experience in the inputting, processing, analysis and interpretation of scientific data using computer software (for example R, MS Excel, MS Access).

EG-05 Only:
Experience in the coordination of scientific equipment maintenance and calibration, and the procurement of required equipment for scientific monitoring or research projects.
Note: Experience is defined as at least 1 year of performing similar tasks.

Common to All Streams:

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL STREAMS:

Travel as required.
Work for extended periods* in isolated field locations, sometimes under harsh conditions. Extended periods* is defined as 7 or more days.
Work nights and weekends and variable hours as required by operational needs.
Carry out strenuous field activities.
Training in appropriate safety or technical procedures commensurate with the position (for example WHMIS, swift water rescue, first aid, small boat operation, firearms safety, etc.).
Valid driver’s license (for certain positions).

Reliability Status security clearance

Medical fitness in accordance with certification by Health Canada (Stream 1 only).
