Clean Water for North Carolina is a 36 year old progressive, science-based Environmental Justice non-profit working to empower communities to protect their environmental health and prevent disproportionate adverse environmental impacts, with offices in Asheville and Durham. We are seeking an Executive Director to continue and extend its work, based in either Durham or Asheville. We have a diverse staff and Board of Directors and prioritize working with Communities of Color, Indigenous communities and low wealth communities.

Responsibilities of this position include:

Program Development and Management in collaboration with staff

Financial Management and Oversight, in collaboration with Board of Directors and Office Manager; Budgeting for over $300,000 per year

Managing staff: hiring and on-boarding new staff, ensuring good communications, guidance for staff tasks, staff evaluation, assignment of program and administrative responsibilities, ensuring staff training and development opportunities;

Providing support to and implementing plans and policies of the Board of Directors, including Board recruitment, building and maintaining relationships, and supporting committee work; planning board meetings with Board leadership; regular reporting of financials, program work and policy needs to the Board.

Cultivation of major donors

Grant writing and management, developing new funding prospects

Maintaining long term collaborative relationships with allied organizations

Coordination of periodic organizational publications, writing contributions; planning with Communications Manager for media outreach

Required Qualifications for this position include:

A demonstrated commitment to social justice and environmental protection through professional and volunteer efforts

At least 2 years of experience organizing or collaborating with Communities of Color, Indigenous communities or low income communities for social or Environmental Justice

At least 4 years of combined financial and program planning and management experience in progressive non-profit organizations, or closely related agency

An undergraduate or graduate degree in physical or biological science, public health or environmental science or law, or at least 30 credit hours in related subjects

Exceptional listening, writing, and speaking skills

Some grant writing and grant management experience

Some experience dealing with state, federal or local regulatory systems

Preferred qualifications:

Some proficiency in Spanish

Experience communicating with media
