The Oregon Health Authority (OHA), Public Health Division (PHD), Drinking Water Services (DWS) in Springfield, OR is recruiting for a Drinking Water Specialist to implement drinking water services in the assigned region.  DWS carries out the mission of the Public Health Division by reducing the incidence and risk of waterborne disease and exposure of the public to hazardous substances potentially present in drinking water supplies.

What will you do?
As the Drinking Water Specialist, you will serve the regulated public water system community as an expert technical resource on drinking water quality, treatment, distribution, and operation issues.  You will promote compliance with drinking water standards through direct contact with water system operators, evaluation of water systems in the field, investigating water quality problems, and providing technical and regulatory assistance to water suppliers.  Assistance is also provided to local health agencies carrying out drinking water services.

What are we looking for?

Requested Skills and Experience

The following skills, knowledge, abilities and experience are requested at the time of hire:

  • Three years of experience in drinking water or a natural resources field. At least one year of the required experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in an environmental health or natural resources program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, and/or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND a bachelor's degree in environmental health or natural resources or a related degree or three additional years of environmental health or natural resources experience, specifically in drinking water quality. (A master's degree in environmental health or natural resources will substitute for up to one year of the required experience; a doctorate degree in environmental health or natural resources will substitute for up to two years of the required experience.)
  • Experience working with public drinking water systems
  • Experience conducting inspections of water systems and investigations of environmental contamination.
  • Experience applying environmental rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to public water systems.
  • Ability to travel frequently with some overnight stays.

Special Qualifications

  • Applicants must be a RegisteredEnvironmental Health Specialist in Oregon and maintain current registration for Pay Option D ($4514 - $6596); or
  • Applicants must become registered as an Environmental Health Specialist Trainee within 6 months of hire or be registered as an Environmental Health Specialist Trainee, and be able to obtain registration as an Environmental Health Specialist in Oregon within three years for Pay Option A ($4312 - $6294).
