KWR recently received funding from the European Union Horizon 2020 research programme for the project AquaSPICE. The aim of AquaSPICE is to ensure a more sustainable use of water in the process industry. In this way, AquaSPICE promotes awareness about the efficient use of natural resources.
AquaSPICE looks into optimising the use of water at different scales, i.e., from a single specific industrial process (a specific installation/unit) up to and including an entire factory, to other collaborating industries (‘industrial symbiosis’) or other sectors (e.g. domestic and/or agriculture).
We are looking for a young early career researcher (MSc level), to carry out research activities within the AquaSPICE project team.
As a researcher you will formulate the scientific, institutional/regulatory, industrial and commercial background work for the development of technological innovations, to ensure that innovations meet the requirements of parties in the process industry and technology providers. You will assist in the development of a novel framework for the efficient use of water in industry (Industrial Water Efficiency Framework). More specifically, you will investigate and evaluate the current industrial water efficiency situation, trends and resources in the European Union More specifically, it is your task to investigate and assess the use of water in the process industry in the European Union: what is the current situation and what are the trends and potential sources of water? You will analyse the current technical, organisational and regulatory frameworks and draw up recommendations for the future. The novel Water Efficiency Framework will be applied both at the Industry and at the policy-making levels.
Part of your role will also be to contribute in ensuring that the framework is actually used in practice. To this end, you will consult with the various stakeholders and include their input and feedback in the conceptual architecture of the technical, organisational and regulatory framework to be developed.
Although your work will mainly be related to the AquaSPICE project, it is anticipated that you will contribute to other KWR projects as well.
KWR is looking for an early career researcher with
- a BEng in Civil or Chemical Engineering, followed by a completed MEng or MSc degree Water/Wastewater Engineering and Management or a relevant degree in engineering/business management field at Master level;
- practical technical knowledge and experience in the field of (waste) water treatment processes;
- practical knowledge and experience in the field of technical management, especially in the development of frameworks for the efficient use of water including technical, economic and regulatory aspects;
- experience in developing and testing new wastewater treatment technologies;
- an understanding of relevant innovative technologies for the treatment of wastewater, especially in the process industries;
- a general knowledge of sustainability in process industries, especially in the field of operational water management;
- the ability to collaborate on and coordinate activities with different stakeholders;
- the ability to approach research from an integrated perspective;
- the ability to bridge science to practice, and an interest to collaborate with researchers and partners in the Netherlands and worldwide.
KWR offers a position within a professional organisation. As a research institute we maintain strong links with universities. Consequently KWR can support you in developing and carrying out a PhD trajectory based on the work in the AquaSPICE project.
We offer the position for a period of 4 years. Afterwards, a permanent position as a researcher is possible, depending on performance and scheduled work at KWR at the time.
