Global Interfaith WASH Alliance (GIWA)
The Global Interfaith WASH Alliance is the world’s first initiative that is engaging the planet’s many faiths as allies in efforts to create a world where every human being has access to safe, healthy and sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Under the guidance and inspiration of founder, Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswati, President of Parmarth Niketan, GIWA was launched by UNICEF at UNICEF World Headquarters in 2013.
In the state of Uttarakhand, GIWA will be working with its partners to deliver a Life Skills Education Based Curriculum in 16 schools and community interventions in 4 slums, in the Rishikesh area. We envision a future in which the women and adolescents of Uttarakhand receive access to information, skills and services which expand their consciousness of self and others. Through this targeted intervention we will empower youth and their communities to make informed decisions, communicate effectively and develop coping and self-management skills that may help them lead a healthy and productive life and result in positive outcomes for society as a whole, with a focus on protecting the girl child.
The project will see the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the curriculum in Upper Primary Schools through training existing school teachers and mentoring them throughout the school year. Community interventions will be used concurrently to empower youth to take active leadership roles in the community, to further impact the communities of the area. This will be a stand alone project within GIWA managing a small and impact driven team of 7 full time employees, reporting directly to the Board and GIWA Committee.
