Water and Sanitation Laboratory Technician

Full accomplishment of assigned duties and effective coordination of water and treatment control in the mission.
This individual contractor assignment is for a duration of 9 months.
Duties and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Chief of Water and Sanitation (WatSan) Unit and working within the framework of the Engineering Section, the WatSan Laboratory Technician shall (these duties are not all inclusive),
• Liaise frequently with the Chief of WatSan and:
o Perform all tasks related to water and wastewater sampling and testing in the Mission in accordance with International Standards like WHO Standards;
o Prepare water quality test reports and report the deteriorations of water quality found and recommend proper improvement and solutions;
o Prepare wastewater effluent quality test reports and report changes in quality found;
o Submit the water and wastewater testing reports in due time;
• Assist and coordinate the water treatment control & monitoring activities as under:
o Liaise with Water and Sanitation Engineer for planning and implementing water and wastewater sample and analysis program in all regions;
o Ensure that planned water and wastewater samples and tests are implemented properly and as scheduled;
o Assist Water and Sanitation Engineer to conduct water testing physically, chemically and bacterially based on relevant WHO Guideline Values;
o Prepare water testing report with proposed recommendations to improve water quality and/or treatment processes;
o Provide lists of necessary equipment, glassware and chemical reagents in advance of the requisitioning process;
o Monitor the equipment, glassware and chemical reagent inventory;
o Liaise with Water and Sanitation Engineer for expert advice on water treatment process and quality control & monitoring; connected with the water treatment plants and other engineering sub-units, as necessary;
o Work along with water technicians in WatSan Unit and regions on the water quality related issues;
• Train staff including selected military officers and Camp Services staff on water and wastewater sampling procedures and daily field water tests;
• Perform other related functions as assigned by the Chief Engineer or his proxy.
Skills: Technical knowledge: Thorough knowledge of water and wastewater quality testing; knowledge of water treatment processes is an advantage; good written and oral skills, including ability to prepare and present concise oral and written reports, briefings, updates and other documentation; planning and organizational skills; ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor work plans.
Computer Skills: Ability to operate common Microsoft office applications especially Excel and Word, databases, and spreadsheet applications.
Other Skills: Ability to perform duties under stress and in a hostile environment; experience in international military or peacekeeping engineering operations; Ability to work effectively with military and civilian personnel of different professions, nations and cultural background is essential; possession of a valid Driving License.
Academic Qualifications: University degree in chemistry or microbiology or technical diploma with appropriate apprenticeship training in water and/or wastewater laboratory testing.
Experience: A minimum of three years of relevant experience working in a water or wastewater laboratory or equivalent.
Language: Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.
