Job overview

Major reports are sounding the alarm for urgent action to halt the loss of nature. Nature and natural ecosystems provide a non-negotiable foundation for economic growth, human health and prosperity. Business performance is increasingly being impacted by the changing risk landscape of nature loss and the climate emergency. An apex goal for nature is being established as scientists accelerate their work to develop science-based targets for nature. Consumers, stakeholders, even governments, are increasingly expecting business to act. WBCSD members are ready to engage and want a structured way to contribute in the fast-moving nature agenda.

In this context, WBCSD has launched the Nature Action Project.  We are looking for a candidate with very strong project management experience and member/customer engagement skills, with a passion for nature and technical understanding to assess and prioritize business actions to halt and reverse nature loss, working to accelerate nature based solutions.

 

Responsibilities and duties

The candidate, managing an associate, liaising with other WBCSD team members, and partners, will develop and lead the following work streams:

  1. Science-based Targets for Nature:

    • Increase WBCSD member capacity to support the development of technical and scientific protocols and targets, helping to ensure the protocols, methodologies and targets are aligned with supporting co-benefit outcomes including:
      1. Science-Based Target Network (SBTn) development of science-based targets for nature, and testing of its corporate guidance;
      2. GHG Protocol for Land Use in partnership with WRI.
    • Organize consistent and cohesive engagement to keep members informed on policy, targets, protocols, tools etc. to:
      1. Ensure visibility to fast-moving developments on policy asks, methodologies and target setting;
      2. Provide streamlined way to provide input to the processes;
      3. Help members begin readying their own organizations for the results.

 

  1. Nature Based Solutions guidance & finance:

    • Nature-based Solutions Guidance Report Series: develop a series of guidance documents to help business leaders understand what NBS (and NCS) are, build consensus on KPIs, also improve consistency of measuring and reporting outcomes.
      • This document will focus on sectors and business-led transition pathways for action to address the drivers of nature loss outlined by IPBES and other recent scientific publications;
      • It will build from “The Future of Nature and Business” report in the New Nature Economy report series (report 2) building towards collective action solutions for Food, Land and Ocean Use; Infrastructure and Built Environment; and Energy and Extractives.
      • The work will include:
        1. Specific leading examples NBS companies are developing or implementing now;
        2. How NBS outcomes are being measured for impact/performance/success;
        3. How those projects deliver against the IPBES report’s five drivers of nature loss and contribute towards achieving an apex target for nature;
        4. Priority collective action areas or guidance for companies to get started within their own business.
    • Nature based solutions finance to shift investment decision-making: develop recommendations and guidance to help accelerate finance and investment KPI’s, data standardization and mechanisms for biodiversity, including forests, soil, range lands and other solutions.
    • CEO Guide for Nature-based Solutions: publish high-level syntensis of the case for nature; identify impactful nature-based solutions; key policy recommendations and needs; and financing for nature.

 

  1. Mobilize Business Action & Leadership:

    • Elevating key solutions into international nature & climate milestone events (UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP 15, ​UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP26, IUCN World Conservation Congress, amongst others). This workstream will be supported by the Policy & Advocacy team.
    • Supporting engagement with the Taskforce for Nature-related Financial Disclosures, of which WBCSD with the Redefining Value Program is a member of the working group for business engagement.
    • Sharing knowledge on business action for nature (case studies, roundtables, dialogues), including:
      • Peer-learning and joint-problem-solving platforms through a series of webinars to showcase examples and tease out barriers/learnings.
      • Business summaries of landmark reports (such as the WEF New Nature Economy Report and the Dasgupta Economics of Biodiversity Review).
      • Trainings on relevant topics, such as Natural Capital (in collaboration with We Value Nature).

 

The Nature Action project collaborates with key internal and external partners. WBCSD supporting work includes Policy Development, which is led by the Food & Nature Policy and Advocacy team and ongoing collaboration with existing WBCSD projects. These workstreams will contribute further to capacity building and delivery of Nature Action, including:

From 2021 onwards, a Leadership Group for Nature Action Project will be nominated, and co-leaders will be elected for the Project Manager to work with across the 3 workstreams:

  1. Science-based Targets for Nature
  2. Nature-based Solutions guidance
  3. Mobilize Business Leadership

This position is full time and will report to the Managing Director, Food & Nature Program.  The role will be based in Geneva.

Some travel (15%) is expected.

Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in a technical/ environmental scientific discipline with a minimum 5 years relevant work experience
    • Knowledge and expertise: Passion and technical experience in biodiversity and nature-based solutions implementation.
    • Facilitation and stakeholder engagement: Strong demonstrated experience in successfully aligning different stakeholders and the ability to create effective relationships with new partners or stakeholders. Capacity to be assertive and take initiative when appropriate
    • Project management: Strong demonstrated experience in project management and effective facilitation of different perspectives towards a common objective. Capacity to work independently by setting priorities within own work streams, identify and proactively address problems and work to deadlines
    • Communication: Engaging communicator both in person and in writing. Ability to adjust style of communication to suit audience (e.g. present technical topics to a non-technical audience)
    • Teamwork: Evidence of successfully working across teams and diverse interest groups
    • Multi-Tasking: Ability to manage own projects and ad hoc demands simultaneously, set priorities, effectively utilize available resources, identify and address problems, and meet deadlines
    • Language skills: Fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential, additional languages beneficial
