ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Facilitator of Learning (‘Environmental Educator’), you will collaborate with the Education Team to improve and then deliver a climate leadership program for grade 6-8 co-learners (‘students’), acting as a public-facing representative of Sierra Club BC (SCBC). You will also engage in pre- and post-program email communication with school facilitators of learning (‘teachers’) to support them to engage with SCBC educational resources and encourage youth climate leadership. Beginning in 2021, you will lead the Education Team in developing and executing a pilot climate action program for Grade 9-12 in support of SCBC’s strategic plan.
You are inspired by youth climate strikers and respect their leadership roles at local, regional, national and international levels to address the climate crisis. You are curious and passionate about determining how you and SCBC can support broader youth involvement in climate action, leveraging wider community support.
You encourage inquiry, acknowledge that you don't have all the answers, and are excited to learn about and apply Transformational Learning. You also enjoy researching and designing curriculum and educational materials for middle and high school students.
You can communicate with diverse communities through an environmental and social justice lens, based in intercultural knowledge and understanding, and your own lived experience. You have a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
You will work in a non-hierarchical team based on mutual respect. You and your team will be responsive to the advice and counsel of the Education Program Manager, Campaigns Director and Cultural Voice. You will collaborate most closely with the other Facilitators of Learning, Education Program Manager, and Climate Justice Campaigner.
Our main office is in Victoria, however we are mostly working from home, following COVID-19 guidelines. We encourage applicants in the Greater Victoria area and those willing to work remotely from the Lower Mainland.

- Lead our Climate and Place program across BC for Grade 6-8 learners. Improve the current program in collaboration with the Education Team to thread a Transformational Learning approach and an Indigenous lens into the program, and deliver workshops to students.
- Provide pre- and post-program support to teachers (primarily via email, also via phone and video call).
- Lead the development and execution of a new pilot high school climate action program.
- Network, communicate and collaborate with community partners including schools, school districts, climate action networks/groups, Indigenous leaders, and/or other non-profit organizations.
- Lead the drafting and production of written, visual, audio and/or video curriculum and engagement materials for Grade 6-12 youth related to climate action.
- Advocate for inclusion of climate change into all school subjects via interdisciplinary approach.
- Co-develop and deliver Professional Development to school facilitators about how to talk about climate change and support youth climate leadership.
- Work with our Climate team and Communications team to suggest and co-produce social media content to engage and inspire youth climate leadership and adult ally-ship, especially from school staff.
- Liaise with our Climate and Communications teams to identify opportunities to amplify youth leadership and connect youth with broader climate campaign moments.
- Write periodic blog posts and magazine articles about youth and climate action.
- Co-manage Google Classrooms content, uploading new materials and replying to questions/comments.
- Due to COVID-19, as well as the goal of supporting youth leaders around the province, program delivery will be both in-person (where health and safety guidelines allow) and online (via video calls).
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrated track record of high quality education-related work with middle/high school-aged youth.
- Involvement in climate or social justice organizing, or experience offering related youth education.
- Energetic and self-starter, who can convey optimism and inspire action while acknowledging challenging realities of climate crisis.
- Highly organized, adaptable, and able to prioritize tasks.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for engaging with youth and adults.
- Experienced in writing engaging educational materials and curriculum for youth (knowledge of new BC Curriculum an asset).
- Awareness of and curiosity about environmental issues, climate science, sustainability and social justice
- Direct experience with and/or education of Indigenous knowledge and worldviews.
- Intermediate skill set with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), video conference calls (Zoom) and Google Classrooms. Assets: basic to intermediate knowledge of CMS (WordPress), video editing software and graphic design.
- Experience working with youth from a variety of cultural backgrounds and/or marginalized communities, for whom English is not their mother tongue (ability to explain content in multiple ways).
- This is a 0.9 FTE contract position (33.75 hours per week, equivalent of 4.5 x 7.5-hour workdays) starting October 19 2020 and ending June 25 2021. For the right candidate, the position is renewable annually (new contract would start in roughly mid-September 2021).
- Compensation will conform to Sierra Club BC’s salary grid. Current salary range is $23.35-$25.60 per hour, with annual increases within the range, plus annual cost of living adjustments.
