Climate Action Network (CAN) is a worldwide network of over 1,300 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in more than 130 countries working to promote government and individual action to limit human-induced climate change to ecologically sustainable levels. CAN members work to achieve this goal through information exchange and the coordinated development of NGO strategy on international, regional, and national climate issues. CAN has regional network hubs that coordinate these efforts around the world.
CAN is seeking an intern to join the Communications Department to primarily work on its website refresh project for an initial 3-month period, starting 5 October through 31 December 2020. The contract may or may not be extended depending on organisational requirements and resources. The selected intern will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience working within the Secretariat of an esteemed international network of environmental organisations focussed on addressing the climate emergency. CAN has a flexible/remote office location policy that applies to internships as well and so the position will be home-based. The successful candidate will report directly to the CAN Communications Officer - Digital & Social Media.
Responsibilities will encompass a range of tasks including, but not limited to:
- Organising various content produced by CAN International such as policy papers, publications, statements, press releases, newsletters, videos etc. from our current Drupal 7 website to appropriate tags for the relevant events, regions, topics, and bodies (50% of time to be allocated in this task);
- Uploading the above-mentioned content to the new CAN website (20% of time to be allocated in this task);
- Documentation of the migration process, as well as the protocols and guidelines produced for guidance on the new website (10% of time to be allocated in this task)
- Remaining time will be allocated accordingly and divided among the following:
- Geo-tagging of the membership database;
- Ensuring that the webpages have complete, correct and updated information;
- Join internal and working groups calls, as needed and possible.
Educational Objectives: What you will learn during this internship?
CAN’s internship program is designed to provide students and recent graduates with an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge and training about our programmes as well as supporting CAN. In this internship, you will learn the following:
- Develop and refine organisational as well as critical thinking and analytical skills; Gain knowledge related to climate change, the climate negotiations, civil society campaigns, communications and public relations, and website/database management;
- Learn about the UN climate decision-making process and civil society spaces for participation and influence;
- Develop a growth mindset – you’ll seek out opportunities to better develop some on-going initiatives;
- Become an effective communicator – by interacting with people from different backgrounds, cultures and timezones, you’ll learn how to communicate well and effectively;
- In addition, you will widen your professional network, make new connections in the world’s largest network of NGOs working on climate change;
- Learn how to best work independently – though with enough supervision and guidance.
Length of Internship:
This Internship will be for a period of 3 months from October to December, which may or may not be extended depending on organisational requirements and resources.
- Candidates should be college/university undergraduate students or recent graduates with less than 2 years of work experience; or graduate students with less than 2 years of work experience;
- Interns are expected to work between 25-30 hours a week during the 3-month internship period;
- Excellent organisational and project management skills coupled with great attention to detail;
- Strong interest in climate change and social justice issues;
- Interest and experience in working on data collection projects;
- Experience in website development/management or web content creation is desirable;
- Ability to effectively communicate in written and spoken English is essential;
- Ability to work independently in a remote office environment;
- Strong time management skills and ability to meet tight deadlines whilst having flexibility and adaptability to change;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
