It's hard to believe that today 844 million people do not have clean water and 2.3 billion do not have a decent toilet - around one in three of the world's population. Every two minutes, a child under five dies from diarrheal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

We started because no NGO like us existed. We'll end when no organisation like us is needed. In the meantime, we're making great progress - since 1981, we have reached 25 million people with clean water and, since 2004, 24 million people with sanitation.

WaterAid is looking for a Communications and Campaigns Officer to play a vital role in our mission to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere by 2030.

 

Key responsibilities include:

The Communications and Campaigns Officer will be responsible for enhancing visibility amongst the development sector and other stakeholders through media, public relations, documentation and dissemination of WaterAid Uganda best practices, success stories, key learnings and research findings. The post holder will support local and national campaigns and will be key to the delivery of quality communication and learning opportunities within WaterAid and partners at all levels. The role will help devise, develop and deliver a comprehensive strategic and tactical communications plan to support advocacy, fundraising and profiling WaterAid Uganda locally and internationally. The post holder will be responsible for raising the organisation's media profile by revising, defining and managing the communication strategy that focuses on and maximises key moments to influence and elevate the attention to water, sanitation and hygiene.

The post holder will develop and manage a dissemination plan for policy research outputs/products to relevant decision-makers and donors to influence policy to facilitate universal water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). The person will be the focal point of contact of the organisation within the media fraternity by developing and maintaining positive and proactive relationships to support the work of WaterAid and its partners.

The post holder will support the development of capacity building initiatives on key communications skills and will ensure that the virtue resource centre is developed. The post holder will undertake field visits to document/photo-document success stories of partners.

To be successful, you'll need the following:

  • A Master's Degree in communications or a relevant discipline
  • Extensive experience in communications, campaigns or media advocacy related work areas.
  • Extensive knowledge of campaigns and documentation in the development sector.
  • Is a proficient writer, with an insightful ability to tailor and deliver messages. They will seek to engage audiences, rather than "tell‟ them.
  • Good understanding of national WASH related calendar, multi sector approaches and functioning of government structures.
  • Excellent photography and editing skills coupled with good interpersonal relations.
  • Possess a network of media.
  • Takes the initiative and can foresee potential opportunities and problems.
  • Demonstrable experience in community mobilisation and public speaking.
  • Proven experience of acting as an organizational spokesperson, experience of giving media interviews and briefings.
