Climate Change Advisor
Summary of Role:
The Climate Change Advisor in the Lands, Resources and Consultations (LRC) Branch of the Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO) provides support on climate change and environmental issues and initiatives. Under the direction of the Managers in the LRC Branch, the Climate Change Advisor will assist in developing programs aimed at building capacity in MNO communities to understand, mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change. This will include assisting in planning and delivering community information sessions and workshops and may include assisting with planning and delivering on-the-land community-based climate change monitoring programs.
Key areas of responsibility
- Coordinate work associated with delivering meetings, small and large gatherings, virtual workshops, symposiums etc. focused on climate change, environmental protection and community-based monitoring. This may include but will not be limited to: developing content, agendas, and budgets; finding relevant speakers, booking venues and generating purchase orders, facilitating meetings, and participating as a subject area expert.
- Provide climate change and environmental expertise and analysis for MNO program development as well as for workshops and community information sessions., including the incorporation of Traditional Knowledge and Land Use Studies.
- Project manage components of MNO’s Climate Change program, potentially including but not limited to: proposal-writing, developing work plans, reporting to funders and coordinating environmental education and community environmental monitoring activities.
- Analyse and incorporate community feedback to provide responses to government climate change programs, policies, initiatives to advance the MNOs interests and priorities with respect to lands, waters and resources.
- Draft presentations, briefing notes, policy papers, research papers.
- Coordinate third-party consultant work as necessary.
- Travel to communities for meetings and gatherings, and to coordinate community-based monitoring and training activities. This may require overnight stays in the community and a varied work schedule.
- Assist with communication plans that require climate change-related content which could include one or more of the following deliverables:
- Plain speak communication tools for the Métis Community on climate change policies, programs, initiatives, legislation and projects; and
- Mail outs, advertisements and other related communications tools to all Métis households providing information on projects.
- Log activites and tracking of deliverables including:
- Meetings attended with communities, dates and locations;
- Meetings attended with other organizations, dates and locations;
- Issues discussed;
- List and description of initiatives that have been undertaken/addressed;
- Training undertaken by the Analyst; and
- General outcomes
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes:
- Strong desire to act in the service of the Métis Citizens, to advance and uphold rights and culture
- Completion of post-secondary education in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Membership in an accredited association related to the profession (varies by position)
- A high degree of technology literacy and proficiency in standard office equipment
- Advanced communications skills, both written and verbal
- Strong research and analytical skills
- Strong project coordination, including the design and implementation of project work-plans
- Superior organization skills
- Highly detail-oriented
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing demands and assess changing priorities
- Demonstrated ability to assess situations and problem-solve independently
- Demonstrated ability to work alone/independently with minimal supervision
- Completion of a Master’s degree in a relevant field
- Knowledge of Métis-specific and broader indigenous policy and research, key challenges, and programs
- Demonstrated experience in a related field
- Previous 2 years or more experience in a similar/comparable role
- Demonstrated ability to write high quality evidence and data-based reports and professional presentations
- Demonstrated ability in policy and program development and evaluation
- Demonstrated ability to quickly acquire and expand knowledge and to be flexible in a demanding and dynamic environment
- Previous experience dealing with confidential information
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage project budgets and project deliverables using project management software or other processes
All positions at the MNO may require the following:
- 1. Current CPR/First Aid certification or ability to obtain
- 2. Completion and maintenance of Vulnerable Sector Verification
- 3. A reliable vehicle (or ability to rent), driver’s licence, $1,000,000 liability insurance, and a clean driving record
- 4. Flexibility to work extended hours as necessary
- 5. Ability to occasionally travel within Ontario for limited periods of time
- Completion of post-secondary education in environmental sciences or environmental studies, or equivalent experience; a Master’s degree in a related field is preferred.
- 2-5 years experience in a comparable role in environmental sector is required. Climate change or environmental science experience is preferred.
- 2-5 years experience with writing environmental reports, providing recommendations and delivering presentations to different stakeholders
- A strong ability to interpret data and reports, including environmental monitoring data
- A thorough understanding of Canada’s climate change policies and initiatives including Canada’s Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change.
- A combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of above.
- Previous work experience with Indigenous communities is an asset.
- Previous work experience in government policy, program development or project management related to environment and climate change is an asset.
- An understanding of climate change and the related science, environmental issues and Indigenous issues, or a demonstrated ability and willingness to learn about these and other processes and issues quickly.
- Knowledge of climate change policies, programs, initiatives, legislation and related environmental and technical matters, and their relationship with Indigenous issues, policies and duty to consult would be an asset (i.e., climate change, Indigenous Guardians, community-based monitoring).
