Tetra Tech is seeking a senior/subject matter expert (SME)-level Hydrogeologist. Position reports administratively to Tetra Tech's Chantilly, VA / Washington, DC metropolitan office, but may reside anywhere in the continental United States. The selected candidate will perform independent optimization reviews and provide expert-level technical support of hazardous waste site clean-up at all stages of the project pipeline (investigation, design, interim remedial/removal action, remediation, long-term monitoring and operations and maintenance). The successful candidate will be responsible for leveraging their experience to support and lead tasks involving the performance of independent optimization reviews according to the methods defined under EPA’s “National Strategy to Expand Superfund Optimization Practices from Site Assessment to Site Completion” (National Optimization Strategy). The successful candidate will be expected to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to review site documents and data, identify key findings, and recommend specific actions and application of best practices that improve the protectiveness, effectiveness and cost-efficiency with which an environmental cleanup reaches its stated goals. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide expert-level technical support on hazardous waste characterization and remediation projects, site-level technical assistance tasks, specialty technical research, and development of best practices-based technology transfer publications and/or training.

Must be highly motivated, customer-focused and work well in a team environment. Strong technical analytical skills and demonstrated excellent technical writing and verbal communications skills are fundamental to this position and are required. A background demonstrating an ability to synthesize information from multiple types of site documentation and data sets is required. Experience and a working knowledge of groundwater fate and transport modeling; high-resolution site characterization (HRSC) strategies, methods and technologies; adaptive management, and the Triad Approach to Site Characterization and Cleanup, including systematic project planning, dynamic work strategies (DWS) and real-time measurement technologies is highly desirable. Experience with managing and/or performing 3-dimensional data visualization and analysis (3DVA) also highly desirable.

Qualified candidates must have one of the following (in no order of preference): PhD in Geology, Hydrogeology, or related field with at least 10-15 years’ experience; MS in Geology, Hydrogeology, or related field with 15-20 years’ experience; BS in Geology, Hydrogeology, or related field with over 20 years’ experience. Professional registrations desirable.  Physical demands are limited to travel and attending optimization review site visits at contaminated sites, which may include having to climb steep slopes in mountainous areas up to approximately 10,000 feet above mean sea level and occasionally entering underground mine workings and open-pit mines.  Must be willing to travel periodically to conduct site visits, often in remote locations, in support of optimization reviews.
