About the Project

Multi-scale Modelling for Contaminant Mobilisation in Organic Enriched Water Infiltration Process through Porous Media
The interaction of chemical, physical and biological processes that affect the fate, transport and redox cycling of contaminants in the treated wastewater and/or organic-rich water infiltration process through soils and different porous media is not clearly understood. This research project contributes to the understanding of water movement and pollutant transport in various porous media. In this research project, the biological removal of pollutants will be taken into account along with physical and chemical adsorption in the organic enriched water infiltration process, which will be considered under experimental and simulation analysis. In this project, multi-scale formulation modelling will be performed in order to adequately describe the mobilisation and the transport of pollutants within the porous materials with comparison, calibration and validation by column experiments.
The research team is led by Dr Salem Gharbia, who specialises in integrated environmental systems modelling. The team also includes Dr Leo Creedon, Director of the Mathematical Modelling Research Group (MMRG) at IT Sligo, Professor Laurence Gill of Trinity College Dublin and Prof Martina Zeleňáková of the Technical University of Kosice, Slovakia.
The ideal candidate for this project is a highly motivated individual with a first-class or high second-class honours degree or a master’s in environmental or civil engineering, environmental science or a related discipline.
The study includes an important experimental component, and therefore, practical experience in a lab environment will also be an advantage. Coding skills in R, Python or MATLAB are desirable. Previous research experience in environmental modelling will be advantageous.
FUNDING SOURCE: President’s Bursary 2020 with a maintenance grant of €13,000 p.a. and up to €4,000 p.a. for expenses as approved. Tuition fees (currently €819 p.a.) will be paid by the Institute for all holders of student bursaries. Students are required to pay their registration fee. The registration fee for 2018-2019 is €3,000 p.a.

DURATION: Funding will be initially for a maximum of 2 years full time Master’s registration. This research has potential to transition into a PhD up to a maximum of 4 years.
