The Watershed Science & Modelling Lab of the Earth and Atmospheric Department at the University of Alberta is looking for an innovative and highly motivated candidate to develop and conduct research on water related risk and opportunities for beef industry under the changing climate of western Canada. The successful candidate will utilize established models for water, crop yield, and rangeland forage production together with spatial and temporal beef data to determine water related risks and opportunities for the beef industry while considering the impacts of climate change and severity of the conflicts over water resources by other economically important sectors. The end goal is to provide scientifically credible knowledge for informed development in western Canada.

Qualifications and Specific Skills

  • PhD degree in Water Resources Engineering and Management, Environmental Engineering and Sciences, Agricultural Sciences or a closely related fields
  • Track record of success in publishing peer reviewed papers in related scientific journals
  • Proficient knowledge and understanding of watershed hydrology with a specific focus on soil-plant-water relationship and interactions with climate and land management practices
  • Proficient knowledge and understanding of principles and applications of statistical methods for processing and analysis of environmental data
  • Proficient knowledge of scripting and programming for environmental modelling, database management and geospatial tools for processing and analysis of large environmental data sets
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of beef production systems from animal feed to meat
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, prioritize, adapt to rapidly shifting priorities and manage research projects from start to scientific publication
  • Superior written, communication and interpersonal skills for effective and efficient development of scientific publications and interaction with other researchers and public
