Watershed Programs Field Technician via Idealist

The Bay Foundation (TBF) is seeking to hire a permanent or seasonal Field Technician to join TBF’s Watershed Program team. The primary responsibilities of the Technician will be to conduct field work (e.g., scientific monitoring, research, and restoration activities) at several ecological habitat restoration sites in the Los Angeles area, including dune, beach, wetland, and riparian habitats. Additional Technician responsibilities include logistical planning, field preparation, community and volunteer habitat restoration events, data entry and quality control checks, coordinating interns and volunteers, laboratory support, and general administrative tasks. The Technician will also aid in report and grant writing and perform tasks related to website, electronic media maintenance, and other community engagement activities.

Habitat restoration work includes but is not limited to non-native vegetation control (e.g., manual, mechanical, or chemical), native seed collection, native seed dispersal and container plant germination and installation, construction and maintenance of fencing and erosion control, and other native habitat restoration techniques under the supervision of experienced scientists. Familiarity and active experience with ecological restoration and scientific monitoring is a plus. The Technician will be required to work safely and proactively to ensure the safety of others in a number of environments including dune, beach, wetland, and riparian habitats.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor of Sciences (or Arts) degree in an applied environmental science, biology, ecology, civil engineering, or a related field OR 3 years equivalent experience in native habitat restoration

• Field experience with scientific monitoring, research, or restoration

• Ability to lift a minimum of 30 lbs repeatedly to pull and move invasive vegetation

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (especially Word and Excel)

• Ability to work on multiple projects independently and as part of a group

• Valid current California driver’s license

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with California vegetation identification and communities /alliances

• Internship or independent researchexperience

• Proficiency with statistics programs (e.g., R, Systat, or SPSS) and geospatial mapping and analysis programs (e.g., ArcGISPro)

Expected Hours: 40 hours per week. Compensation will be commensurate with experience. If hired on a seasonal basis, there may be a future opportunity to move to a permanent position, pending grant funding availability.

Location: Field work may occur throughout Southern California, but will be focused on the Los Angeles region (e.g., Ballona Wetlands Ecological Reserve, LAX Dunes, coastal beaches, intertidal habitats, Santa Monica Mountains, and other locations). Lab and office work usually occur at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles, CA. However, due to COVID-19, office work is currently conducted remotely from home. This is subject to change. Weekend or evening work is occasionally required.

COVID-19 Fieldwork Guidelines: The safety of our staff and fieldwork participants is a priority of TBF. Following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, TBF staff will utilize safety guidelines when conducting fieldwork. This includes, but is not limited to, face coverings and social distancing (6+ ft).
