General Role:  The Project Assistant supports the accomplishment of the goals and objectives of Arizona Land and Water Trust (Trust) and our Land & Water Program by assisting with a wide variety of conservation projects and providing general Land & Water Program support.  He/she reports to the Land & Water Program (LWP) Director and may also at times assist the Land & Water Program Manager and Desert Rivers Program Manager with specific land and water transactions while also supporting the Trust’s outreach and education program.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist LWP Director, LWP Manager, and Desert Rivers Program Manager with all aspects of the Land and Water Program and associated outreach and education efforts.
  • Assist LWP Director and LWP Manager with all aspects of conducting Ranching into the Future Workshops, including scheduling and presenting, as requested
  • Assist with all aspects of land and water program transactions, including due diligence and project planning
  • Assist LWP Director’s role in strengthening partnerships with landowners, government agencies, foundations, elected officials, and other conservation partners
  • Help coordinate and attend meetings and public outreach workshops with agency personnel, elected officials, other conservation organizations, landowners and other stakeholders to further conservation projects
  • Help to identify funding sources for land and water transactions and other program-related costs and assist in preparing progress reports and correspondence to current foundation and agency grant administrators
  • Help monitor legislation and regulations at the local, state and federal levels that affect land conservation
  • Assist the LWP Director and their staff with other projects and tasks as needed
  • Assist the Executive Director and Development Coordinator with Trust events including field trips, Saguaro Circle, and other related activities as requested

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a related field
  • Must have strong interest in land and water conservation and some background in natural resources or related field,
  • Experience with land/water transactions a plus
  • Experience working with landowners, both urban and rural, a plus

Competencies:

  • Superior project management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to effectively converse with rural and urban land owners, agency staff, academics, elected officials, and local leaders
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment while balancing competing priorities
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time, primarily throughout Arizona
  • Resourceful in researching information on diverse topics
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and related programs
  • Knowledge of ArcMap and other GIS products a plus
  • Knowledge of Arizona landscape, ecology, and/or water policy a plus

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to meet with landowners off-site, travel, work at a desk, and operate a computer
  • Must be willing to participate in field work
  • Work is primarily performed between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. during weekdays but some evening and weekend meetings will be required.

Salary:

  • The Project Assistant is full-time, exempt, position (40 hours/week)
  • Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications
