It's hard to believe that today 844 million people do not have clean water and 2.3 billion do not have a decent toilet - around one in three of the world's population. Every two minutes a child under five dies from diarrheal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation.

WaterAid is looking for a Head of Programmes to play a vital role in our mission to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere by 2030.

Working within the programmes, the Head of Programmes will responsible to provide:

  • Strategic Contribution
  • Programme Management, Assurance and Accountability
  • Financial and Budget Management
  • Leadership & People Management
  • Programme Development and Fundraising

To be successful, you'll need to be:

  • Encourage and promote empowering and collaborative leadership, effective management, and a culture of openness, innovation and accountability in line with WaterAid's values within team
  • Good knowledge of Sierra Leone Government's development policies and strategies, especially as they relate to water, sanitation and hygiene
  • Strong Knowledge and understanding of programme design, development and implementation processes
  • Policy analysis and development skills
  • Possess entrepreneurial qualities such as risk taking, innovation, and creativity
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills and computer literacy skills
  • Strong organisational skills, versatility, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Fully committed to WaterAid's vision, mission and values and a way of working that demonstrates this, with the ability to communicate this enthusiasm to others.
  • Minimum of Master's Degree in Development Management, Water Resources Management, Engineering, Sanitation and Hygiene, development studies or comparable qualifications/professional qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years proven managerial experience at increasing level of seniority and responsibility, 5 of which should have been in the design and implementation of water, sanitation and hygiene programmes
  • WASH technical knowledge of appropriate design and construction of water and sanitation facilities, and methods and approaches to improve sanitation and hygiene behaviors is required. Policy

We started because no NGO like us existed. We'll end when no organisation like us is needed. In the meantime, we're making great progress - since 1981, we have reached 25 million people with clean water and, since 2004, 24 million people with sanitation.
