About the role

APEM has a large and increasing portfolio of projects working with aquatic invasive non-native species (INNS), freshwater ecology and hydro-ecology. Projects include monitoring, risk assessment, management and eradication of INNS; and delivering the environmental components of water company water resource plans and drought plans. Leading or providing senior level technical input to a wide range of projects, you will work as part of a team of aquatic scientists with cross-cutting expertise in ecology, hydrology and environmental management. Typical projects are driven by the requirements of the Water Framework Directive, the Habitats Directive and legislation specific to management of aquatic INNS. Clients may include the UK environment and conservation agencies, the water and energy industries and infrastructure developers.

As these are rapidly developing fields, it is an opportunity to develop new areas of work and to engage with clients to ensure that we provide the best service possible for their needs.

About you

We are seeking a senior consultant with specific expertise relevant to one or more the following areas:

  • Freshwater INNS, particularly if experienced in invasive macrophytes and/or riparian plants;
  • Freshwater ecology;
  • Hydro-ecology/water resource management.

You should have at least four years’ relevant professional experience and an MSc or PhD in a relevant subject.

The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of policy and law covering INNS/water resource management in the UK and further afield, along with desk or field-based experience. Understanding water company operations and regulation is essential, along with experience designing monitoring and management programmes for INNS and ecological impact assessment. Experience in delivering this work within commercial consultancy, industry or regulators will be highly desirable.

You will be required to work both independently and as a leader of project teams, and in addition to providing specialist technical input, you will be expected to communicate effectively to clients and within multi-disciplinary project teams. You will need to demonstrate your ability to apply your skills in a commercial consultancy environment through experience of managing projects and dealing with people effectively and professionally. In addition, you should be prepared to travel to attend meetings, site visits and carry out field work across the UK. A valid driving licence is therefore essential, along with excellent report writing and numerical skills and a proven ability to deliver projects on time and within budget. Experience of tendering is also desirable.
