The Portland Water Bureau is looking for a talented and preferably, experienced Cryptosporidium analyst to join our Water Quality Laboratory. As part of an ongoing compliance program, the Portland Water Bureau is bringing Cryptosporidium analysis in-house.

A candidate who will be able to qualify as an Analyst for EPA Method 1623/1623.1 within one year of hire and possesses additional years of protozoan analysis experience is strongly desired. Experience analyzing phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacteria is also desired, although not required.

This position will report to the Cryptosporidium Principal Analyst / Laboratory Section Supervisor for Microbiology.
 To Qualify:

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:

  1. Knowledge of federal and state laws, procedures and regulations governing drinking water systems and Cryptosporidium and bacteriological treatment, monitoring, analysis, quality assurance, record keeping and reporting.
  2. Knowledge of theory, principals, practices and methods used in complex microbiological, chemical and physical analysis and testing of water and environmental samples including fluorescence assay microscopy.
  3. Knowledge of applicable microbiological analysis, including Cryptosporidium, Giardia, bacteria, phytoplankton and zooplankton.
  4. Ability to use, maintain, and troubleshoot complex laboratory equipment, including microscopes, in the analysis of samples.
  5. Skill in using microscopic analysis to accurately identify and characterize Cryptosporidium and Giardia by specialized microscopy techniques.
