Postdoctoral Research Associate (Surface/Subsurface Hydrology Modeling)

Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Oak Ridge, TN, US

Purpose:
The Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is an interdisciplinary research and development organization with more than 60 years of achievement in local, national, and international environmental research. Our vision is to advance scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that strengthen the nation’s capacity to find solutions that help sustain the Earth’s natural resources. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join a multidisciplinary team developing and evaluating novel multiscale and multiphysics models of watershed hydrology and biogeochemistry.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
You will contribute to the development and application of complex fully distributed models for watershed hydrology and biogeochemisty. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will use advanced community software running on high-performance computing resources to study water availability and nutrient export from watersheds in a changing climate.  You will compare results to observations, existing semi-distributed models, and new data-driven machine-learning approaches. A significant focus will be on multidecadal projections in a changing climate.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in hydrology, environmental sciences, geosciences, environmental or chemical engineering or a related field is required. Applicants must have received their most recent degree less than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.
  • Experience and demonstrated productivity with numerical models of complex phenomena in C/C++ or Fortran is required, as is basic understanding of watershed hydrology.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience with fully distributed integrated surface/subsurface flow and transport models would be a distinct advantage, as would past experience with high-performance computing environments. The successful candidate must work independently and collaboratively as part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team.

Applicants must have received their most recent degree less than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.

We accept Word (.doc, .docx), Adobe (unsecured .pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), and HTML (.htm, .html) up to 5MB in size. Resumes from third party vendors will not be accepted; these resumes will be deleted and the candidates submitted will not be considered for employment.
