Internship - R Programmer

International Water Management Institute (IWMI)

, , XH

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is seeking applications from young and enthusiastic students to join the Water Risk to Development and Resilience (WR2DR) team that conducts research and supports product development with big data, socioeconomic data, and ground datasets and methods using computer sciences. This is done by combining several disciplines such as data processing, machine learning, remote sensing and artificial intelligence, and looking into programmatic problems such as disaster risk reduction (DRR), extreme weather events, onset of disasters, poverty and inequalities. The goal of this internship is to develop R-spatial tools/packages in R Studio/ R Shiny for spatial and related auxiliary data analysis and visualization. Over the course of the internship, the student will work with an interdisciplinary team to implement innovative tools that are robust for spatial data validation.

  • Develop statistical tools in R for uncertainty error analysis and select indicators for multivariate measurements.
  • Explore various deep learning algorithms and libraries, and investigate existing data exploitation methods and automation techniques. (e.g., machine learning, rule-based classifier and geospatial statistics both in space and time)
  • Develop visualizing, and interpret outputs of the statistical analysis of DRR indicators.
  • Provide technical support to the development and maintenance of a spatial database.
  • Work on problems of diverse scope, and ensure task schedules and quality requirements are met.

Qualifications, exposure and skills:

  • Master’s or PhD degree in Geospatial Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Geography, Earth Science or related field.
  • Possess knowledge of R, R Studio, R Shiny and R-Jupyter Notebook.
  • Experience in developing a web framework in R Shiny.
  • Good knowledge of the R packages (e.g., ggplot2, sp, tidyr, caret, dplyr, etc.), and experience in building R-spatial in Google Earth Engine.
  • Good knowledge of handling satellite imagery and geospatial data using the above-mentioned programming languages and/or software.
  • Knowledge of disaster risk science.

Please note that the internship will be on a teleworking basis due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic and travel restrictions. Our preference is for voluntary internships to complete thesis work, but we may offer a stipend in some cases.

The duration of the internship will be for a period of 4 to 5 months.

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is an international, research-for-development organization that works with governments, civil society and the private sector to solve water problems in developing countries and scale up solutions. Through partnership, IWMI combines research on the sustainable use of water and land resources, knowledge services and products with capacity strengthening, dialogue and policy analysis to support implementation of water management solutions for agriculture, ecosystems, climate change and inclusive economic growth. Headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, IWMI is a CGIAR Research Center and leads the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE).

IWMI is an equal opportunity employer and emphasizes the importance of regional and gender diversity and inclusiveness in identifying candidates for this internship and its staff more generally.
