Consultant for a systematic review on the impacts of forestation on ecosystem services in the Andes

Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR)

Lima, Peru 🇵🇪

The Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is a nonprofit, global research organization dedicated to advancing human well-being, environmental conservation and equity.

We conduct research that enables more informed and equitable decision making about the use and management of tropical and sub-tropical forest landscapes. We help policy makers and practitioners shape effective policy, improve the management of tropical forests and address the needs and perspectives of people who depend on forests for their livelihoods. Our multidisciplinary approach considers the underlying drivers of deforestation and degradation which often lie outside the forestry sector: forces such as agriculture, infrastructure development, trade and investment policies and law enforcement.

CIFOR is looking for a

Consultant for a systematic review on the impacts of forestation on ecosystem services in the Andes

Forestation and reforestation can contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration and improve the adaptation of local and regional populations to climate change through water regulation, protection against soil erosion or mass movements, or livelihood diversification. However, several trade-offs between mitigation and adaptation have been highlighted, particularly when reforestation increases carbon storage but degrades water- and soil-related ecosystem services.

In Latin America, several climate change policies (such as the 2016 Peruvian national strategy on forests and climate change) promote forestation and reforestation as measures for both adaptation and mitigation. Other policy initiatives (such as 20×20 and the Bonn challenge) appear also as an opportunity to restore and replant forests in the Andes and to achieve multiple (and possibly conflicting) objectives, particularly economic (timber and non-timber forest products) and environmental (water regulation, soil protection and carbon sequestration) objectives.

There are debates on how soil- and water-related ecosystem services are affected by different approaches to forestation and reforestation, for example, exotic species (e.g., Eucalyptus, Pinus) planted in intensive monoculture systems or native species managed using more natural regeneration methods. There are case studies in the Andean region (especially with Pinus plantations, but also with native species) but there is no overall systematic and rigorous synthesis to inform policy or management decisions.

Duties and responsibilities

Summary of responsibilities

  • Duties and responsibilities

The consultant will conduct a systematic review of the
existing scientific evidence on the impacts of forestation and reforestation on
ecosystem services related to water and soil in the Andes. The in-depth review
on soil- and water-related ecosystem services will be complemented by a lighter
review of other ecosystem services (e.g. timber or fuelwood production and
carbon sequestration) to allow discussing trade-offs between ecosystem services
in forestation and reforestation and trade-offs between climate change
adaptation and mitigation.

The research will apply rigorous, objective and
transparent methods for this systematic review, such as those developed by the Collaboration
for Environmental Evidence (CEE). The approach will not be limited to a desk
literature analysis but will also involve relevant actors (scientists, policy
makers and practitioners). Results will be communicated through an article in
an international scientific journal.

  • Expected outputs

The consultant will lead
the writing of a peer-reviewed journal article in English, produce a report in
Spanish, a blog article, and present the results in communication fora or at workshops
in order to disseminate evidence on trade-offs between ecosystem services in
forestation and reforestation

Education, knowledge and experience

• PhD in forestry or environmental sciences (or other relevant disciplines) or MSc with at least 4 years of professional work experience.
• Knowledge of methods used for systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
• Knowledge of hydrology and soil sciences.
• Fluency in English and Spanish

Personal Attributes and Competencies

• Has excellent analytical skills.
• Has excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and is experienced in working with multicultural and multidisciplinary research teams.
• Has initiative and can work independently as well as in team environments.
