General Overview:

At an entry level, performs hydrologic data collection; analysis and reporting;  construction, operation and maintenance of field instruments and equipment; and/or support of reservoir operations for water supply and flood control.  Assists River Operations Center (ROC) to manage decisions about reservoir and river functions.  This position develops competence, knowledge and experience in own discipline.  Utilizes discretion and independent judgment to determine an appropriate approach within general parameters and some guidance from supervisor, manager and/or more experienced colleagues.

  • Collects and monitors hydrologic data and observations, including stage/discharge measurements, reference elevation marks, high water marks, point of zero flow, channel and control section conditions, evaporation, diversions, water use data, and other information as directed.
  • Constructs and maintains field instruments, including O&M records for stream flow and precipitation monitoring stations, sensors, data logger/transmitters, telecommunications equipment and other equipment as directed.
  • Supports flood operations.  Compiles information needed for flood briefings.  Determines flood gate settings, heights of water above spillways, and hydro-generation operations to pass required flows.
  • Educates residents on lake and river operations.  Communicates and explains water supply, flood conditions and water control decisions to internal and external partners and customers. 
  • Performs hydrologic and hydraulic studies relative to regulation of stream flow.  Estimates real-time tributary inflows and gains in flow to the Colorado River below the Highland Lakes.  Determines minimum release of water required from the Highland Lakes.
  • Schedules hydro operations for flood control, water delivery, hydropower production and hydroelectric plant maintenance needs.  Provides daily and seasonal forecasts of available hydroelectric energy.
  • Compiles information needed for water use allocations, water use reporting, and regulatory compliance.  Assists to analyze data and prepare reports.
  • Gathers hydrologic data and performs field analysis by traveling independently or with other staff to various locations as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

Four or more years of experience in hydrology, such as performing equipment installation/maintenance, hydrologic data collection and hydrologic analysis.  A degree(s) in hydrology, water resources, electronics, engineering or relevant field may be substituted per LCRA guidelines for certain years of experience.
