Eligibility criteria
Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Chief of the Enterprise Solution Section or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Environmental Technologies Specialist will:

  • Contribute to the identification of emerging technologies opportunities for UNEP to be researched conducting online literature research on specific cases, gathering information from various sources such as online scientific journals, technical reports and UN documents.
  • Participate in the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects, etc.; develop project proposals, monitor and analyze programme/project development and implementation; review relevant documents and report; identify problems and issues to be addressed and proposes corrective actions; liaise with relevant parties including partners; identify and track follow-up actions. The thematic topics include blockchain for traceability, money transfer, complementary currencies, and smart contracts applications for the environment.
  • Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources. Undertake survey initiatives; design data collection tools; review, analyze and interpret responses, identify problems/issues and prepare conclusions. Contribute to the preparation of written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
  • Assisting in the compilation of scientific data and information from diverse sources to support the development of frontier technologies use cases applications.
  • Provide specific day-to-day follow up on tasks related to the Programme of Work, e.g. in the areas of capacity development / knowledge management, coordination of working groups, stakeholder engagement, monitoring impact of projects, reporting, etc., as relevant and required by the teams.
  • Assist with the development of project documents, contracts and any other legal instrument to engage institutions and individual experts in implementing activities related to emerging technologies.
  • Collect evidence of the uptake from other UN agencies of innovative technologies undertaking reviews, proofreading and summarizing.
  • In collaboration with relevant staff members, generate blockchain use case applications for UNEP divisions as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.
  • Contribute with economic assessment of specific blockchain related projects to build strong use cases for the earth sciences, climate change and environmental protection.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Business Administration, Innovation Technologies, Environmental sciences, or a related field

Required experience:

Experience remark:

The applicant must have a degree in a field relevant to the environmental technologies (environmental studies, economics, and environmental assessments) with preferably 0-2 year’s minimum work experience in environmental technologies monitoring or assessment and experience with analyzing and reporting results for different audiences.

Skills:

  • Proficiency in Windows, MS Office, Power BI and skills in developing PowerPoint presentations, Excel worksheets and databases, and literature research.
  • Demonstrated writing and speaking skills in English.
  • Experience working in teams and in engaging with clients. Working with multi-cultural teams would be an advantage.
  • Experience in developing concept papers or use cases in emerging technologies, particularly on blockchain and artificial intelligence solutions

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
