Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering is the nation’s first department of environmental science and engineering in the nation. With a strong history of more than 100-years we have an outstanding reputation in part because of seminal contributions made by our faculty. Our faculty use solution-oriented research spanning environmental engineering, environmental health sciences, environmental modeling, hydrology, and environmental chemistry. The Institute for Environmental Health Solutions (IEHS) is a research institute housed within the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering within the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The IEHS is focused on providing local and global environmental health solutions: our public health mission is to reduce the burden of environmentally-influenced disease in North Carolina, the U.S., and abroad, and to identify solutions that support environmental health resilience. The interdisciplinary team of researchers at the Institute use data-driven strategies to protect people who are particularly vulnerable to environmentally influenced disease, translating scientific discoveries into effective, easy-to-apply solutions to optimize their health trajectories. The addition of a talented adjunct professor is desired to bolster critical mass in these important areas and provide the leadership needed to mentor students desiring to work in these areas, lead innovation on existing grants, and seek exciting new directions of discovery in the field. |
