PUBLICATIONS CONSULTANT

Within the framework of the UNESCO and the Italian Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the UNESCO “World Water Assessment Programme – WWAP”, under the overall supervision of the WWAP Coordinator a.i., in close collaboration with all members of the WWAP Secretariat, the Publications Officer is requested to follow up on the production process of the forthcoming WWAP publications, with particular focus on the activities related to:

 

WWDR 2021 and related Executive Summary and Facts and Figures:

WWDR 2021 and related Executive Summary and Facts and Figures:

 

1) Monitor and follow up on the internal planning and production process of the World Water Development Report (WWDR) 2021; provide inputs on how to strategize the report and supporting publications. 


2) Support WWAP (Process Manager) during the submissions of the publication proposal of the World Water Development Report (WWDR 2021) to the Publication Board


3) Support WWAP during the review and drafting phase:
a) Compile and prepare the version for comments by UN-Water, and once returned for draft by lead agencies and contributors;
b) Prepare the files for anti-plagiarism verification, liaise with the Editor-in-Chief concerning the outcomes; and
c) Prepare the final version for Endorsement


4) Verify the references (bibliography) and sources of maps, tables and graphs during the reviewing process as planned by WWAP:
a) Drafting phase: Cross-check if complete referencing is provided by the authors; liaise with authors if required;
b) Pre-copyediting phase: Check the accuracy of the references and sources provided, prepare the reference list and source lines for figures/maps and graphs for copyeditor; liaise with authors if information is still missing and proposing alternatives, where necessary; coordinate with authors, Editor-in-Chief and Process Manager in preparing the version for the copyediting;
c) Post-copyediting phase: Proofread the copyedited references and source lines in accordance with UNESCO style; and
d) Pre-printing phase: Proofread the references, source lines and credits in the layout version in accordance with UNESCO style.


5) Support WWAP during the ISBN submission to UNESCO DPI and request for permissions to use external material:
a) Verify/double check the sources of external material like maps, figures and tables provided by authors and contributors, and liaise with the authors and contributors if required;
b) Liaise with publications offices of organizations, commercial publishers and other organizations to request for permission to use copyrighted material in accordance with UNESCO policy; and
c) Follow-up on permission requests; collate all granted permissions for the final ISBN submission to UNESCO DPI and research alternatives if permission is denied in cooperation with the authors, Editor-in-Chief and Process Manager.


6) Support WWAP during the copyediting and proofreading phases:
a) Update the WWDR guidelines for copyediting in cooperation with the Editor-in-Chief;
b) Draft terms of references for copyediting and proofreading;
c) Prepare files for copyediting and proofreading; and
d) Liaise with the copyeditor during the copyediting and proofreading phases for questions and clarifications.
 

WWDR 2021 and related Executive Summary and Facts and Figures (Cont.):

7) Support WWAP during the translation phase:
a) Provide technical details for the terms of references related to the translation of the WWDR 2021, draft terms of references for the translation of the Executive Summary and Facts and Figures in different languages;
b) Prepare files for translation purpose;
c) Liaise with the translators during the process; and
d) Verify terminology and proofread the Italian translation of the Executive Summary and Facts and Figures.


8) Support WWAP during the design and layout phases:
a) Liaise with the graphic designer and WWAP Communications for the selection of color palette, design and layout template; submit the proposals to the management for approval; and
b) Liaise with the graphic designer during the layout phase of the WWDR 2021 in English and Executive Summary and Facts Figures in different languages.


9) Support WWAP in photo research and source file collection (graphs/maps/tables):
a) Identify keywords for photo research;
b) Identify specific photo sources (commercial and free photo stock); prepare proposals for photos and submit to the management for approval (coordinate with the graphic designer, Editor-in-Chief and Process Manager for the selection of the photos);
c) Integrate photo documentation into the ISBN documentation for submission; and
d) Search for the source files of graphs, maps and tables; prepare the files for the graphic designer, propose alternatives if the source files are not available.


10) Support WWAP during the printing phase:
a) Provide technical details for the terms of references related to the printing of the WWDR 2021, Executive Summaries, Facts and Figures in different languages, and other related material; and
b) Liaise with the printing company during and after the printing process;


11) Ensure that the files ad properly archived in WWAP files/records for future uses

Long Description

WWDR 2022 and related Executive Summary and Facts and Figures:
12) Monitor and follow up on the internal planning and production process of the World Water Development Report (WWDR) 2022;
13) Support WWAP (Process Manager) during the submissions of the publication proposal (WWDR 2022) to the Publication Board of the World Water Development Report
14) Support WWAP during the review and drafting phase:
a) Compile and prepare the version for comments by UN-Water, and once returned for draft by lead agencies and contributors;

Water and gender publications:
15) Support WWAP during the production process of the Beijing +25 publications (2), and other publications related to water and gender, which include publications on groundwater (1), regional assessment and monitoring (3) (SIDS, Western Africa, LAC)

Other publications:
16) Proofread translations in Italian of WWAP publications;
17) Translate text (speeches, presentations, letters and short text for publications, and communication material) from English to Italian

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

Academic Qualifications

* University degree in a relevant field.

Technical Competencies and Experience Requirements

* At least 5 years of relevant working experience in the field of publications.
* Proven track record in publication of scientific publications, books, reports, etc.
* Strong knowledge and experience of the editing process and skills in editing technical documents
* Solid grammatical knowledge and relevant internal guidance from scientific lexicons, UN
* (and specifically UNESCO) style guides
* Excellent written and oral English
* Excellent written and oral in Italian. Knowledge of Spanish is an asset.
* Experience in design, photo research, permissions and production
* Good organizational, networking and partnership building skills.
* Ability to prioritize and deliver on deadline.
* Good IT skills. Being proficient in editing software is desirable
* Ability to adapt editing for different materials for different audiences
* Good skills and effectiveness in written and oral communication and presentation.
* Ability to work as part of a team.
* Previous experience in production of WWDR is an advantage.
