Senior Research Associate in Multi-hazard Risk Modelling
We are seeking a Senior Research Associate to work on a new research project to predict multi-hazard risks in Nepal to support risk planning and decision-making by individuals, local and national government bodies, and the humanitarian community. The post is funded by the UK Global Challenges Research Fund and aims to improve decision-making and preparedness in Nepal in order to mitigate the impacts of earthquakes, monsoon rainfall, and landslides.
You will focus on process-based modelling of meteorological, hydrological and geomorphological conditions that lead to landslide susceptibility using a combination of in situ observations and satellite remote sensing. Your duties will also include collaborating with physical scientists, social scientists, and a wide range of partner organisations in Nepal and elsewhere, including government departments, national and international NGOs, and the UN. You will contribute analysis and results to collaborative research projects on the topic of multi-hazard risk modelling. You will publish in highly ranked, peer-reviewed academic journals and contribute to MSc teaching activities. You will be offered significant opportunities to develop innovative science-based solutions to pressing problems in geomorphology, hydrology, and overseas development.
The successful candidate must hold or be close to completion of, a PhD/DPhil in a relevant subject with post-qualification research experience. You will be an experienced geomorphologist, hydrologist or process-based risk modeller with a strong track record of publication in the scientific literature and a genuine motivation to address applied challenges in these fields. You will be able to propose and develop new theoretical approaches and implement them in a high-level scientific programming language.
The appointment will be at Grade 8. The successful candidate will have the salary fixed according to experience. If no suitable applicant is forthcoming, an appointment at Grade 7 (£32,817 - £40,322 p.a.) with an appropriate adjustment of duties may be considered.
This is a full-time post fixed-term until 13 May 2023.
