The consultant will strengthen OHCHR’s capacity-building, awareness raising and information tools on human rights, the environment and climate change and thereby empower people to protect and enjoy the environment through increased awareness of the human rights-environment nexus.
6 months from 1 July 2020 until 31 December 2020.
Duties and Responsibilities
The consultant shall:
1. Support OHCHR’s work and partnerships related to capacity-building on human rights and climate change. This encompasses supporting the development and design of the OHCHR-UNFCCC-PCCB online course on human rights and climate change including development of two initial modules (the introductory module and one on the right to development) and at least two other thematic modules as well as conceptualization of the overall course considering issues such as climate change and rights of the child, Rio Principle 10, just transition, gender equality, climate change, business and human rights, and climate change and the rights of persons with disabilities.
2. Support OHCHR’s work on biodiversity, including related to the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, national biodiversity strategic action plans and related messaging for use in relevant fora. This includes producing a report which analyses the integration of human rights in national biodiversity strategic action plans and provides guidelines for better integration of human rights therein.
3. Support the potential establishment and operations of an Issue Management Group (IMG) on human rights and the environment under the UN Environmental Management Group (EMG), including online nexus dialogues on human rights and the environment.
Academic Qualifications: An advanced degree in International Human Rights Law, Environmental Policy, Development, and/or related area is required.
Experience: A minimum of five years of experience working on human rights, climate change or related areas is required. Experience in drafting reports is also required. Experience in developing capacity-building tools and/or trainings in these areas is desirable.
Language: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
