Overview: 

The Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites applicants for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Surface Hydrology to support its long-term study on surface hydrologic modeling, energy-water availability, climate change impact on hydropower generation, and hydro-climate extreme event analysis. The position will be in the Renewable Energy Systems Group of the Environmental Sciences Division.

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

A successful candidate is expected to have demonstrated publication record in hydro-climate extreme event modeling and analysis, and has interdisciplinary teamwork skills with researchers across different disciplines. The candidate will benefit from the unique capabilities at ORNL including world class computing (Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility) and is expected to develop cutting-edge research on surface hydrology for global energy-water security.

Basic Qualifications:

Candidate must hold a Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering (or related disciplines) with emphasis on surface hydrology.
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and availability of funding.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in surface hydrologic, hydraulic, and reservoir management modeling,
  • Experience in remote sensing data analysis and geographic information system,
  • Experience in machine learning motivated algorithms (e.g., time series analysis using neural networks such as RNN and LSTM),
  • Experience in hydro-climate extreme event analysis,
  • Strong scripting and programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C, Fortran),
  • Strong writing and communicating skills.
