EHS Specialist

Chemours is seeking an EHS Specialist to join our growing Operations team! This position will report directly to the Unit Manager II in our Jesup, GA location.

JOB SUMMARY

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The Environmental Specialist will provide technical and regulatory direction and support,
  • Policy and program management and oversight, and strategy development for environmental program and improvement initiatives.
  • Implementing systems to operate in compliance with federal and state environmental regulations, maintaining environmental records, developing and implementing environmental operating plans and processes.
  • Work closely with mine managers, plant manager, mine planning team, and operations staff to proactively identify and address environmental issues.
  • Direct the daily activities of the Environmental Technician(s) and works with staff and contractors to implement environmental best practices. The Environmental Specialist assists in training mine and plant staff, writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), communicating environmental information, and championing best practices to improve unit performance for both the Georgia and Florida operations.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist in management of site environmental programs including, but not limited to, Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Georgia Surface Mining Act, RCRA, and SARA/CERCLA
  • Oversee preparation, maintenance, and submission of environmental applications, records, reports, notifications, and plans required by the company and regulatory agencies
  • Maintain strong working relationships with regulatory agencies and key stakeholders
  • Analyze data and evaluate current performance and trends
  • Plan and lead self-assessments to identify opportunities to improve performance
  • Ensure systems (tools/methods) to assess facility compliance status are implemented, tracked, and modified as necessary
  • Proactively increase knowledge of current and emerging federal, state, and local environmental regulatory requirements affecting site operations
  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of site processes and how they affect compliance
  • Develop corrective and preventative actions
  • Assists emergency/crisis and spill response activities and notifications
  • Routine field auditing and visibility for interactions with employees.
  • Drive and maintain continuous improvements of the site EHS managing processes and procedures. 
  • Participate in relevant site incident investigations to address/ determine root causes, key factors, and corrective actions.
  • Learn EHS related compliance software.
  • Work to improve systems, processes, individual capability and ownership around environmental compliance
  • Participate as Core Process Owner for site ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Participate and assist in preparation of 1st and 2nd party EHS and ISO 14001 audits

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:

  • BS or higher degree in environmental science, engineering, or other relevant discipline.
  • At least 4+ years’ experience as an Environmental Scientist.  Team management and industrial experience in a manufacturing or mining company is preferred OR military equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated experience with a range of environmental regulatory programs relevant to industrial operations.
  • Knowledge of and experience with one or more aspects of water management, such as hydrology, hydrogeology, aqueous chemistry, aquatic biology, and/or wastewater and stormwater management is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, time management, organizational, and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can work independently with minimal day-to-day supervision. Additionally, the successful candidate will be one who can multi-task, and effectively deal with fast changing and sometimes conflicting priorities.
