Salary: GS-04 $16.72 (Step 01) to $21.74 (Step 10); GS-05 $18.71 (Step 01) to $24.32 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.
Responsibilities
The USGS Alaska Science Center is seeking associate, undergraduate, graduate level student working towards a degree in Geology, Hydrology, Physical Science to gain practical experience in geologic sampling, water quality, surface water, etc.
As a Student Trainee (Hydrology), you will serve in a trainee capacity, performing routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of water measurement and sampling methods, electronic technology and equipment mechanics, and techniques utilized in a chemical laboratory for analyzing water samples.
Duties include: Incumbent receives supplemental training as follows: combined office, classroom and home study of textbooks, publications and office manuals covering theory, methods, instrumentation and equipment under the tutelage of either a training officer or other qualified professional hydrologists. This supplemental training is designed to amplify and expedite progress in both college studies and on-the-job training.
- Gathering basic hydrologic data concerning any one or a combination of four areas, i.e., quantity, quality, availability, and movement and distribution of water;
- Developing hydrologic and precipitation data for current projects;
- Collecting and processing data to be used in computing stream discharge, determining ground water availability or calculating sediment, chemical, or biological concentrations and physical characteristics.
