Position Overview

The Department of Geoscience in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Hydrology Field Technician. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 2 years (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The employee will work closely with graduate students and summer field assistants, and train them for the use of hydrological field methods. The employee will report regularly to the research program PI.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Lead and manage field monitoring programs for multiple projects
  • Train students for the proper use of field and laboratory equipment
  • Ensure the smooth operation of field monitoring programs and the highest possible data quality
  • Maintain a safe working environment through adherence to the Field Work Safety Plan as developed by the supervisor
  • Ability to complete scheduled tasks with little supervision and demonstrate competency in problem solving when unexpected situations arise
  • Excellence in working collaboratively with other team members to accomplish goals in difficult environmental conditions
  • Communicate with supervisor and research team the progress of assigned work duties and any issues that require attention
  • Manage time effectively to complete project work and contribute to research team’s overall research objectives
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining monitoring protocols and accurate data collection and recording
  • Maintain accurate records and high quality data reporting in a timely manner
  • Excellent professional relationships are established with all unit members
  • Maintaining a hazard free environment by following the safety protocol and being attentive to the environmental conditions
  • Excellent judgement in response to a high level of complexity as the work performed requires improvisation upon well-established methodologies
  • Maintain the safety of Physical Hydrology Laboratory and respond to recommendations made during safety inspections

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • B.Sc. degree or equivalent in Geoscience or related discipline
  • Previous work experience as in hydrological work
  • Ability to take a leadership role in coordinating multiple field projects
  • Ability to work independently and provide training to students
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with research team members and external collaborators
  • Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn
