Zambia nationals: WASH Assistant

Under the direct supervision of UNHCR’s Lusaka-based Public Health Coordinator, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

  • Ensure timely and quality implementation of 2020 – 2021 Water and Sanitation WASH Rolling Work Plan (RWP) in schools, communities, health centre and emergency response to the vulnerable people also advance progress towards achieving Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) goals;
  • Provide updates on provincial and district targets for achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status in the target areas especially through monitoring and reporting on continued community compliance with Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) ODF goals;
  • Coordinate the distribution of Behaviour Changes Communication (BCC) materials on use of safe water, environmental sanitation, good hygiene practices and the new MHM guidelines for school also promotion and facilitation of hygiene education in health centres, schools and Community Based Education (CBE) centres;
  • Provide technical support on timely technical assessment, design and feasibility assessment on implementation of WASH facilities in community, schools and health centres;
  • Ensure quality assurance of implementation of activities through frequent field visits and close supervision and monitoring of WASH facilities at community, school and health centres level of Mayukwayukwa Refugee Settlement and host communities in Kaoma district;
  • Collect data and share reports with partners and different stakeholders, reporting on critical issues, bottlenecks and potential problems for timely action;
  • Coordinate WASH cluster meetings to ensure timely WASH response and avoid resource duplication.
Bachelor degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following disciplines: Water Supply Engineering, Water Resource Management, Civil Engineering, Hydrogeology, or a field relevant to international water supply related development assistance.

  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in water and sanitation related areas;
  • Motivated to contribute towards peace and development and to serve others;
  • Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills;
  • Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team;
  • Flexible and open to learning new experiences;
  • Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions;
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required, and knowledge of (additional language) is an asset;
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
  • Computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and others).
