About the role

We are looking for a self-motivated lawyer with a strong corporate or financial services background and litigation experience to join our Climate Programme. In this role, you will be supporting our work targeting large multi-national companies with innovative legal and litigation strategies that drive them toward business plans that align with the goals of the Paris Agreement, with the ultimate objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A key focus of this role will be shareholder rights and the applicant will work closely with asset managers and other institutional investors on their stewardship and engagement activities. 

As Climate Programme Lawyer your key responsibilities will include:

  • Researching and evaluating the potential for using advocacy, pre-litigation and legal interventions, often based on shareholder rights and interests, to influence large companies to adopt and implement policies consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement
  • Identifying opportunities and developing strategies for targeted legal intervention, litigation or regulatory complaints
  • Assisting with and managing on-going litigation
  • Preparing high-quality written work designed to communicate our thinking to a wide variety of audiences.
  • Preparing applications, reports, and presentations for submission to funders
  • Developing and engaging in communications associated with the Climate Programme including preparing presentations, website communications, and press releases

This position can be based in any European office of ClientEarth, although a London or Berlin location is preferred. Please specify the office to which you are applying in your supporting statement.

Role requirements

  • Law degree or equivalent
  • Relevant legal professional qualification
  • Experience of corporate litigation in a relevant corporate or financial services environment
  • Experience of working across multiple jurisdictions in a fast-paced environment
  • A demonstrated interest and understanding of climate and energy-related issues
  • Excellent creative, critical and lateral thinking and excellent analytical skills
  • Excellent legal research, analysis, writing, advisory, and advocacy skills
  • Confident working with and assimilating complex technical, scientific, political and legal material
