Job Summary and Mission

 

This job contributes to Starbucks success by leading the definition of sustainability metrics, and robust data analytics, evaluation and reporting of environmental performance indicators.  The role ensures sustainability reports accurately reflect the condition of the business, are credible, and aligned with financial controls. Leads and educates others throughout the global organization on technical and environmental reporting and accounting methodology. Advises the Company’s internal Environmental Council on technical and reporting matters.  Provides liaison with finance team, external auditors, and external reporting organizations and consultants. Works closely with the Controller, Investor Relations, Law & Corporate Affairs and Public Affairs departments to define sustainability metrics, publish sustainability reports, press releases and Environmental Social Governance (ESG) filings. Models and acts in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

 

Summary of Key Responsibilities

 

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  

Leadership – Setting goals for the work group, developing organizational capability, and modeling how we work together: – Identifies and communicates key responsibilities and practices to ensure the internal cross-functional teams achieve business results. – Supports the implementation of company programs to ensure the success of the Company.

 

Planning and Execution – Developing operational plans for the work group, managing execution, and measuring results: – Plans and manages business unit and department processes and practices to ensure that programs are aligned with company business goals and objectives. – Prepares, communicates and educates client groups and team on changes in policies and practices within the organization.

 

Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following:

  • Defines, analyzes and evaluates enterprise-wide data and factors for reporting of climate, water and waste impact. Monitors and reports on portfolio performance. Identifies, analyzes and communicates trends and issues sustainability and environmental performance impact and measurement.
  • Consults, advises and collaborates with other business units by providing analytical support for business initiatives, contract negotiations, and regulatory compliance activities. Serves as subject-matter expert on cross-functional project and program teams.
  • Collaborates with the program leads responsible for each functional area to deepen his/her understanding of material issues and opportunities that are pertinent and material to the sustainability goals.  Support the development of impact metrics for current and new programs.
  • Synthesize large amounts of data into concise, decision-useful information for Environmental Council and program leaders.  Ensure data relevance and quality through appropriate selection of data sources, sound collection, data quality tests and strong data management. Develop appropriate strategies for dealing with data quality issues. Effectively use software and systems in support of work.
  • Perform portfolio analytics on current and new programs in development. Perform quantitative analysis to identify sustainability performance indicators that are most impactful on performance of investments. Identify and research material ESG factors in the portfolio.  Create and evaluate cross portfolio analysis of specific sustainability factors to identify areas for potential engagement.

  • Assists with the evaluation of all third-party consultants, auditors and reporting organizations.  Supports negotiations and management of contract agreement terms and conditions for the life of the relationship, including tracking and reporting contract management, extensions, administration and termination. Participates in and assists with the coordination of meetings related to the overall contract process.

  • Partners with finance organization to lead data collection, evaluation, and reporting of sustainability metrics to submit to external reporting bodies (Carbon Disclosure Project, Dow Jones Sustainability Index, SASB, etc).  Analyze Starbucks performance for opportunities to improve scoring, rating and rankings related to sustainability performance.

  • Develop expertise in critical issue areas, such as climate, water, waste energy, and other natural resource efficiency and environmental sustainability.

Summary of Experience

  • At least 5 years of experience in sustainability reporting industry, preferred experience in multi-site global retail or restaurant chain.

  • Experience utilizing a variety of statistical, mathematical, and/or analytical tools in order to design, develop, and evaluate data analytics

  • Understanding, expertise and passion for sustainability and environmental impact industry

  • At least 3 years of contract and/or vendor management
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills in English
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Strong work ethic and positive attitude
  • Self-motivated, work individually or as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet tight deadlines
  • Advanced MS Office (Word/PowerPoint/Excel) skills
  • Experience with Data Science languages (Python, R, Scala, Java HTML 5 SQL)

  • Ability to analyze complex large databases and effectively use Data Visualizations tools like Tableau, BI

  • Good knowledge of financial tools (Factset strongly preferred, BARRA)

  • Familiarity with ESG data vendors preferred
  • Basic understanding of environmental data science
