- A master’s degree in water resources sciences, hydrology; civil, environmental, or biosystems engineering; watershed science and management; urban or regional planning; or closely related field.
- Experience and education in watershed management, urban stormwater management, or related disciplines.
- A proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships and collaborations with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders, including those that may have diverse missions, goals, cultures, and backgrounds (e.g., regional water managers, community officials, legislators, program participants, and industry groups).
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- A demonstrated ability using technology to enhance learning.
- A valid driver’s license and own means of transportation, and applicable vehicle insurance.
- Use of personal cell phone.
- Two (2) years of post-degree professional experience related to the position;
- Experience designing, delivering, and evaluating educational programs;
- Experience in applied research and project management.
- Experience writing and administering grants.
The person in this position will travel overnight to locations across Minnesota approximately 1-3 nights per month and day trips approximately 1-3 times per month. If the successful candidate is housed on the University of Minnesota’s St. Paul Campus, they will be required to travel to Minnesota Sea Grant in Duluth 1-3 times per month, and vice versa if the candidate is housed in Duluth. Successful candidates must have a valid driver’s license or have a demonstrated ability for timely travel across all parts of Minnesota.

ABOUT THIS POSITION
This Extension Educator will bring in-depth expertise to address complex water management and water quality issues, specifically related to urban stormwater management, community resiliency, and watershed education. The educator will collaborate with diverse organizations to identify, develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs that will have a measurable impact on water resources by engaging with water professionals, policy-makers, agricultural organizations, land managers, and others in coastal and inland communities across the state. The position will require working with a range of public, private, and non-profit stakeholders including:
- Soil and water conservation districts;
- Watershed districts and watershed management organizations;
- City and county governments;
- Commercial interests;
- Water resource professionals; and
- State agencies such as the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, Department of Natural Resources, Board of Water and Soil Resources, Pollution Control Agency, and Department of Health.
This position will be a joint appointment between Minnesota Sea Grant and the University of Minnesota Water Resources Center, a unit of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences and University of Minnesota Extension.
- Lead Extension programs, education, and outreach related to urban stormwater and community resiliency, including identifying needs and developing, teaching, and evaluating research-based curriculum. These programs may include:
- The Minnesota Stormwater Research Program
- The Watershed Game
- Non-point Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO)
- Contribute to research that supports Extension programs, education, and outreach related to water resource issues.
- Adapt Extension programs for audiences with a range of knowledge, background, and cultures.
- Be an active member of Minnesota Sea Grant, the Water Resources Center, the Water Resources Extension Team and broader University of Minnesota community through engagement, teamwork, and promotion of diversity and inclusion principles.
LOCATION OF POSITION
This position will be either on the University of Minnesota St. Paul Campus or Minnesota Sea Grant office in Duluth The location is negotiable and will be determined at the time of hire.
