Job Purpose
To undertake research of international excellence and contribute to knowledge exchange activities relative to the discipline, contribute to learning and teaching on agreed programmes and undertake administration and service activities in line with the School/College’s strategic objectives.
Main Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and progress individual/joint research projects of international standard in the subject area with the support of a mentor, as required.

Write up research findings/outcomes for publication in leading journals for dissemination as appropriate, identifying potential sources and contributing to funding applications as an individual or team member.

Contribute fully to developing and enhancing the research profile of the School/College, including establishing a track record of high-quality publications.

Contribute to the planning, organisation and delivery of teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses within the subject area in accordance with the subject’s priorities including accepting responsibilities as course co-ordinator for one or more courses.

Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.

Participate fully in examination and other assessment processes, as appropriate, using a variety of methods and techniques and to provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support their learning.

Contribute to the development of theory and practice in the subject area.

Supervise individual student projects at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, and to contribute to the supervision and training of postgraduate research students, as appropriate, to ensure their effective development.

Take on administrative or management roles within the subject/School as assigned by the Head of School.

Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

Qualifications
A1 Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] or equivalent professional and/or teaching experience in a similar or related role
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
C1 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in the specialist subject/discipline and of teaching methods and techniques to work within the subject area
C2 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity
C3 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement
C4 Developing track record of research outputs compatible with enhancing the School’s research profile in accordance with School objectives
C5 Thorough knowledge and ability to apply policy, practice and procedures including broader University/sector/external [e.g. commercial] awareness
C6 Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in the field with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area
C7 Ability to work on own initiative to contribute to the research and teaching activities within the subject area and wider School environment.

Job Features
The James Watt School of Engineering at the University of Glasgow is an energetic and growing international centre of excellence for Engineering research and teaching. The School leads research in five Divisions: Aerospace Sciences; Biomedical Engineering; Electronics and Nanoscale Engineering; Infrastructure and Environment; and Systems, Power and Energy. We have 135 academics and 160 post-doctoral researchers supported by 65 technicians and 26 professional services staff. Currently we have 350 research students working towards doctorates.
The School offers 20 undergraduate programmes in Aeronautical, Biomedical, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical disciplines leading to BEng. and MEng. degrees. Our programmes provide for both single discipline and interdisciplinary studies to meet the needs of employers, and most are in the top-10 of UK league tables. The School also offers a range of taught postgraduate Masters programmes including interdisciplinary studies with Computing Science, Earth Sciences, Physics, Life Sciences and Glasgow School of Art. The School leads two Centres for Doctoral Training and is a partner in two more. Opportunities to study for a PhD are available in every Division.
We are one of the most research intensive Engineering Schools in the UK with an annual research income of £19m p.a. In addition to the Research Divisions, we host the James Watt Nanofabrication Centre, a £50m research asset; major capabilities for the UK National Wind Tunnel Facility; the Electronic Systems Design Centre; the Centre for Medical and Industrial Ultrasonics; the Scottish Government Centre for 5G technology; and the Glasgow Computational Engineering Centre. The Research Divisions support a broad range of research, led by our world-leading academics. All our research is carried out in our extensive laboratory and computing facilities.
We are now seeking to fill a position for a successful academic in the areas of Water or Environmental Engineering. The post-holder will develop, lead and sustain research that complement the existing strengths in Water Environment research within the School. Areas such as environmental sensing, water resources engineering, informatics and the interface between physics and biology are of particular interest. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, assessment, project supervision and curriculum design at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and participate in School management and organisation.

Salary will be on the University’s Research and Teaching Grade, level 7, £35,845 – £40,322 per annum.
This a full time, open ended position.
