Australia nationals: Environment and Sustainability Officer

The Department of Defence seeks to be a leader in sustainable environmental management and is responsible for managing a large estate containing a diverse range of landscapes, threatened species, and heritage values. Service Delivery Division, Northern and Central Zone, is seeking an environmental professional to join the Environment and Sustainability team based in NT (Darwin).

The position will suit an environmental professional, capable of fostering high levels of collaboration with contracted partners and diverse internal and external stakeholder groups for Defence outcomes.

The successful applicant will have environmental assessment and auditing experience with a strong commitment to exceptional customer service, leadership, teamwork and innovation. The Environment and Sustainability Officer (ESO) role contributes to a broad range of environmental and heritage programs, policy and initiatives to support the sustainable use and management of the Defence estate. The role gives a mix of primarily office based work, with regular site based work and travel to construction sites, remote Defence Training Areas and properties. Off-road 4WDriving may be required at some locations.

Key outcomes of the Environment and Sustainability Officer role includes:

  • Provision of environment and heritage legislative, policy and technical advice
  • Implementation of Defence environmental policy and strategies
  • Environmental assessments and approvals of infrastructure projects and military activities
  • Environmental risk and incident management
  • Operating within an information and spatial management system
  • Undertaking a broad range of stakeholder engagement and liaison including the delivery of environmental awareness briefings

  • Possess multidisciplinary skills in the environmental and heritage field with demonstrated experience in providing advice, environmental assessment and approvals, risk identification and management, interpretation and application of environmental legislation and policy, and the implementation of environmental management plans and programs.
