Headwaters, Inc. is a Letcher County based organization dedicated to improving local water quality through education, providing accurate and accessible water quality information, and empowering citizens and communities to care for local waterways.
-Build upon current relationships with community members, stakeholders, and project partners.
-Build out and implement a plan for environmental education in Letcher County Schools.
-Lead and build enthusiasm for community-based environmental restoration projects in the area.
-Use the North Fork of the Kentucky River Watershed Plan as a guide for building partnerships and seeking funding for long-term clean water solutions.
-Leading community education and engagement efforts around citizen science and clean water;
-Performing project management and grant administration functions such as budgeting, reporting, and grant writing for any future phases;
-Working with and supervising an Americorps VISTA Volunteer;
-Building out and regularly working with a volunteer base for Headwaters projects
-Being the primary contact between multiple project partners, including the Kentucky Division of Water, the University of Kentucky, and others;
-Attending and participating in trainings throughout the year;
-Enhancing and expanding the Headwaters drinking water testing program.
Candidate Qualifications and Competencies:
The ideal Headwaters Watershed Coordinator is passionate about clean water and education and can connect the value of clean streams to the quality of our drinking water and recreational opportunities. Preference will be given to candidates with a connection to the Letcher County community and familiarity with East Kentucky’s social and political context
The following qualifications and skills are preferred:
-A four-year degree in a Natural Resource field or two years of equivalent experience
-Written and oral communication skills
-Familiarity with grant writing
-Environmental education experience
-Knowledge of water quality issues, land use issues, and watershed planning a plus
The position is based out of Whitesburg, Kentucky and ideally the candidate will live and work in Letcher County. This position is part-time (30 hours per week expected). Headwaters will contract with the individual to provide the needed services for $600 per week ($31,200 per year).
