Future Water was established in 2016 as a transdisciplinary research institute at the University of Cape Town. Its

research contributes to new thinking, practices and solutions for sustainable water resource use, including

attention to water scarcity, water sensitivity, treatment technologies, resource recovery, governance and social

justice. The institute has been founded on the premise that future water solutions will arise through inter- and

transdisciplinary approaches to research in which socio-economic and technical considerations are addressed

jointly. To this end, Future Water, while hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, involves

academics and researchers from the Faculties of Commerce, Engineering and the Built Environment, Health

Sciences, Humanities, Law and Science. Future Water has been awarded a Junior Research Fellowship for three

years and therefore invites applications for this contract post available from 1st May 2020.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead a research project on the water-energy-land nexus in mining

communities and engage in associated scholarly and applied research within Future Water, working closely with

the team drawn from a variety of disciplines.

Minimum requirements:

  • A PhD degree in a relevant field or closely related to water research;
  • 2 or more years’ post-doctoral research experience;
  • Good qualitative and quantitative research skills;
  • Demonstrated publication track record, aligned with an early stage research career;
  • Demonstrated ability in professional writing, including grant writing.

Key attributes that will be an advantage include:

  • Understanding of the South African water, energy and mining sectors;
  • Experience in research co-ordination;
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a member of an inter/trans-disciplinary team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Participation in scholarly research as part of the institute, building a research profile
  • Writing and editing research reports and publishing of academic papers
  • Presenting research findings at local / international conferences and seminars
  • Support and supervision of research students
  • Assisting in the identification and preparation of research funding opportunities
  • Research coordination, administration and networking
  • Engagement with internal and external stakeholders

The annual cost of employment, including benefits, is between R470 033 and R500 000.
