Position Summary
The Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering Research (CAESER) under the Herff College of Engineering at the University of Memphis invites applications for a postdoctoral position, pending availability of funding. The position involves addressing groundwater sustainability in western Tennessee, working within the rural landscape to assess groundwater use and availability, assessing recharge mechanisms to the region’s aquifers, determining threats to aquifer recharge and mechanisms to encourage recharge, investigating the exchange between groundwater and surface water, assisting in the development of educational material for distribution among multi-generational audiences, and seeking external funding opportunities to advance CAESER’s research agenda. The goals are to determine aquifer recharge mechanisms, ascertain the impact of land use change on groundwater sustainability, derive best practices to ensure the longevity of groundwater quantity and high-quality in the region, and inform the public and elected officials on the topic of groundwater sustainability and to encourage informed decision making. The research will be conducted through CAESER, primarily under the direction of Dr. Brian Waldron. The primary location for the post-doctoral researcher will be in Memphis, Tennessee, at the University of Memphis main campus with much time also spent at the University of Memphis-Lambuth campus in Jackson, Tennessee. This is a one-year appointment with possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and continued funding.
Candidates must have a recent Ph.D. in a relevant field of science or engineering. Individuals with experience in agricultural water use, groundwater field studies, and community outreach are encouraged to apply.
