The person and the job:

We are looking for a skilled Strategic Communications Specialist to join our well-respected international research organization headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, with 13 international offices. If you are a creative person with sound editorial judgement, well-versed in strategic use of social media, able to work independently, and as part of a multicultural team AND are excited to make a big impact in helping people in developing economies use water more sustainably and become more resilient to droughts and floods, come join us!

Preferably with a relevant degree, you should be on top of the latest digital trends and able to produce visually compelling content for IWMI digital properties, which includes success stories, blogs, infographics and video products, and provide design guidance for our publications and other collateral.

Reporting to the Head, Global Communications and Knowledge Management you will work with researchers, regional communicators and country representatives to identify and tell stories, conduct interviews, and handle internal communications. You will also oversee the production of web pages, video and infographic products in coordination with internal and external experts.

To succeed, you will need at least 5 years’ experience in a busy communications unit preferably in the area of international development, agriculture or research. You will also have demonstrable experience in turning scientific and policy issues into compelling narratives.

Requirements

You must possess:

  • Experience producing content for a wide variety of digital products;
  • Sound creative sensibility, particularly with respect to visual communications;
  • Strong analytical and interviewing skills;
  • Effective organizational skills and demonstrated ability to work to a deadline and in a fast-paced environment;
  • An ability to deliver with a good work ethic;
  • A university degree in a relevant field;
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a generator of content in a relevant communication field;
  • The ability to grasp scientific and technical concepts and communicate them clearly to various audiences;
  • The ability to be a positive team player with good interpersonal skills, and experience working with people from a wide variety of cultures;
  • Fluency in English to the level of a native speaker, with excellent writing and editing skills.

It would be a significant advantage if you have:

  • Experience in writing/producing content on scientific and/or global development issues.

This is an internationally recruited position with a competitive salary commensurate with experience, an attractive retirement plan, comprehensive international insurance coverage and a transportation allowance. If successful candidate requires international relocation, they will be eligible for additional allowances, which include housing, education, shipping assistance, and annual home leave travel for employee and eligible dependents.
