Proposed project : The paradigm shift in urban hydrology in recent decades has seen the emergence of new solutions for decentralized urban stormwater management. Experimental studies carried out at the scale of source control facilities have highlighted the “multi-component” advantages of these systems: control of water and pollutant flows, reduction of urban heat islands, support for biodiversity, etc. Nevertheless, the “cumulative” effect of these source control measures (SCMs) at the scale of an urban territory remains rather poorly understood at present. 

The proposed post-doctoral topic is part of phase 5 of the OPUR observatory ( and the Wise Cities research project (I-SITE Future). It aims to develop and implement a model to assess the effects of a systematization of stormwater source management at the scale of an urban area. It will be developed in the framework of a partnership between ENPC/Leesu and UGE/GERS/EE.

The TEB-Hydro hydro-microclimate model will be used and further developed to represent the effects of SCMs on water, pollutants and heat flows.. Hydrological modelling options of SCMs and simplifying hypothesis will also be tested at a smaller scale, by comparison to SWMM model. Some SCMs are already represented in TEB-Hydro (green roofs, street trees) but pollutant flows are not taken into account.

The first step of the postdoctoral work will consist in a review of the approaches used in existing modelling tools or in research projects for the representation of SCMs in large scale modelling tasks.  Based on this review, a, a scheme for a conceptualization and a generic description of SCM structures at the scale of a TEB-Hydro grid cell will be proposed and coded within the TEB-Hydro model.

The deployment and application of the model at the urban scale also requires the development of scenarios for the diffusion of source management structures and the implementation of a semi-automatical method from the parametrization of these scenarios in TEB-Hydro. This will make up the second main part of the post-doctoral work. Performance indicators that may include, but are not limited to, water, energy and contaminant flow balances or other more qualitative criteria will have to be established. . Finally, the model will be implemented to study the impacts of implementing SCMs at the scale of a fraction of the Greater Paris area.

Profile sought : We are looking for a PhD in urban hydrology (or more generally in environmental sciences and techniques) with experience in the field of hydrological modelling. Skills and a taste for programming are required. Knowledge of the Fortran 90 language would be an asset but is not mandatory. Ability to work with heterogeneous teams (managers, researchers) on pluri- and interdisciplinary subjects will be appreciated. Fluency in English will be required.

Administrative arrangements: 24-month fixed-term contract (CDD) (start date planned for the first quarter of 2020).

Location : the post-doctoral fellow will be mainly based École des Ponts ParisTech (, in Paris conurbation, within Leesu research laboratory Travels and stays in Nantes, at the Water and Environment group of Gustave Eiffel University (y) (EE, ) are also planned.
