Forest Trends seeks a clear communicator passionate about natural infrastructure to join our Lima-based Natural Infrastructure for Water Security project team as Knowledge Management Specialist. He/she will work closely with our Lima team, as well as our Peruvian and international partners to develop, capture, and communicate knowledge that is critical to scaling effective, equitable, and sustainable natural infrastructure investments in Peru. The Knowledge Management Specialist is part of the Cross-Cutting Themes team and works closely with Project leadership, the communications team, and NIWS project partners to develop materials aimed at key national and international audiences outside the project.

This position will be contracted as a full-time staff position in Forest Trends’ office in Lima, Peru, under Peruvian labor laws with all corresponding state-mandated benefits. Forest Trends offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience and private health insurance. The Knowledge Management Specialist reports directly to the Cross-Cutting Themes Lead.

ABOUT THE NATURAL INFRASTRUCTURE FOR WATER SECURITY PROJECT AND FOREST TRENDS

The Natural Infrastructure for Water Security (NIWS) Project works to scale-up the conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of ecosystems and indigenous technologies to reduce water risks such as drought, floods, and water pollution. To achieve this goal, the Project works to improve enabling conditions for adopting natural infrastructure solutions to water challenges; to improve the information generated and used by decision-makers to inform investments in natural infrastructure; and to facilitate the design, financing and implementation of natural infrastructure projects. Additionally, the Project has a mandate to mainstream a gender perspective across its activities and works to reduce gender inequalities in water resource management and in natural infrastructure solutions.

The NIWS Project is led by Forest Trends, with our local partners CONDESAN and the Peruvian Society for Environmental Law (SPDA), as well as international experts EcoDecisión and researchers from Imperial College London. The Project is executed through a cooperative agreement with USAID. It is financed by USAID and the Government of Canada. It began implementation in December 2017 and is programmed to conclude in June 2023.

Forest Trends is a non-governmental organization based in the United States that works to conserve forests and other ecosystems through the creation and wide adoption of a range of environmental finance, market, and other payment and incentive mechanisms. Forest Trends does so by:

  • Providing transparent information on ecosystem values, finance, and markets through knowledge acquisition, analysis, and dissemination;
  • Convening diverse coalitions, partners, and communities of practice, to promote environmental values and advance development of new markets and payment mechanisms;
  • Demonstrating successful tools, standards, and models of innovative finance for conservation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Knowledge Management Specialist will work closely with the Cross-Cutting Themes team leader and consortium partners to identify key project advancements to be included in project reporting as well as prepared for distribution to project counterparts and international audiences.

The Knowledge Management Specialist primary responsibilities will include:

  • Development of quarterly and annual project report narratives for USAID
  • Development of annual work plan narrative for USAID
  • Development of specialized studies and analyses promoted by Forest Trends our partners, including hydro-economic studies and case studies on Project learning sites
  • Management of the NIWS project toolbox and content development (in coordination with NIWS technical specialists and consultants) in response to needs of natural infrastructure project developers and decision-makers in Peru, e.g., technical specifications for natural infrastructure project interventions, benefit quantification methods, guidance for incorporating gender into project design
  • Coordination with the US-based communications team in the development of key products for international audiences
  • Documentation of NIWS implementation, achievements, and lessons learned, including through blogs, articles to be published on Forest Trends’ and third-party platforms, and materials for distribution at national and international conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Professional with postgraduate studies in relevant field (e.g., environmental studies, environmental economics, natural resources management, water resources management)
  • At least two years of experience applying knowledge of concepts and approaches related to climate change, ecosystem services, water resources and/or the environment
  • Organized person, with the ability to self-direct, handle different tasks and issues at the same time, with a results-oriented approach
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate technical content to a range of actors through media including blogs, articles, and social media
  • Affable character, with the ability to work in a team, and with empathy in different cultural contexts.
  • Full fluency of English (preferably native language) and Spanish, with demonstrated ability to produce technical documents written in both languages.
  • Commitment to the mission of Forest Trends.
