Water Planning & Coastal Sciences; Science Delivery & Knowledge; Science and Technology; Dutton Park. The purpose of the role is to undertake research and development in areas of aquatic ecology, such as data collection, analyses and modelling in line with departmental and client priorities.
As Senior Scientist (Team Manager), you will:
• Lead, supervise and coordinate the development and implementation of biological monitoring and assessment programs to understand, quantify and numerically describe aquatic ecosystem condition and trend.
• Lead multi-disciplinary teams (involving Cooperative Research Centres, government, university, local authority, community and private sector parties) to develop cost-effective monitoring and assessment methods.
• Provide specialist input into the development, modification and enhancement of policies, and management guidelines concerning aquatic ecosystem health, management and restoration
• Provide specialist advice, support, judgment and recommendations on issues for a broad range of natural resource management mechanisms, including policies, aquatic ecosystem management strategies, catchment management plans, water resource plans, resource operation plans, environmental risk and impact assessments, with particular reference to biota and ecosystem processes.
• Coordinate inter- and intra-state networks, linkages and partnerships with industry representatives, research funding agencies, educational institutions, other natural resource agencies and research organisations, community groups, staff and other clients to ensure the ongoing relevance of the information and services provided.
• Provide high quality scientific and technical information and advice in a variety of formats to management; other state, national and local government agencies; policy makers; industry and the community.
• Ensure the requirements of clients and collaborators are satisfied through the efficient, effective and timely delivery of project milestones and outputs, in accordance with agreed outcomes.
• Supervise staff as required and, as appropriate, represent Water Planning Ecology and the Department at internal and external forums.
• Maintain an active individual professional development program; foster appropriate professional linkages at state, national and international levels; contribute to the professional training and development of project staff; and evaluate national and international research and management trends concerning aquatic ecosystem health monitoring and assessment.
The role reports to the Principal Scientist, Water Planning Ecology.
About the person
Your suitability for this role will be assessed on the basis of your experience, skills and achievements in the following core capabilities as they apply to the responsibilities of the Scientist.
Technical – demonstrated knowledge of Queensland’s aquatic ecosystems, contemporary land and water management issues concerning riverine, wetland and reservoir systems, ecosystem health, hydrology, water quality, eutrophication and public health. Computer skills, including database, statistical, ecological modelling and work-processing software abilities.
Supports strategic direction implements research, monitoring and assessment programs that address a variety of ecological, water quality and/or management issues and objectives. Demonstrated record of leadership and achievement in inland aquatic ecosystem health or ecological status monitoring and assessment
Achieves results – Demonstrated record of leadership and achievement in inland aquatic ecosystem health or ecological status monitoring and assessment. Identify, lead, implement and contribute to business improvement initiatives, within the business group and department.
