The Water Protection and Sustainability Branch oversees and exercises provincial leadership in the development of water science and evidence-based water strategies, plans, polices and legislation for the sustainable management and stewardship of BC’s water resources.  The work of the Branch guides the decision-making and regulatory actions of the provincial water program, including other natural resource ministries, agencies and programs.  Working collaboratively with BC government ministries, other governments, industries, businesses, communities, universities (i.e., academia) and non-government organizations, the Branch directs provincial programs, services and investments to achieve BC’s social, economic and environmental outcomes related to water.

The Water Policy Advisor provides research, analysis, advice and support in the development and implementation of provincial water and natural resource sector policy, strategies, governance models for water, procedures, legislation, planning frameworks and non-regulatory and outreach tools to deliver on government priorities and to help achieve BC’s social, economic and environmental outcomes.  This role also provides policy advice to clients and supports training to help guide program, policy and legislative delivery to the natural resource sector. The Advisor draws on the strengths of analytical and conceptual thinking and problem solving while building relationships and strong teams to deliver on the priorities of agencies in the natural resource sector, health, local government and other ministries and programs.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Post-graduate degree in Natural Resources management, Environment, Sustainability, Public Administration, Public Policy, Law, Business Administration or other related field; OR
  • Under-graduate degree in the areas stated above PLUS 2 years directly related experience.


  • Experience providing leadership and expertise in the development of policy. Preference may be given to applicants with this experience in the areas of water resource or natural resource management.
  • Experience leading teams focused on policy development or dealing with policy-related issues.
  • Experience researching, analyzing and evaluating complex regulatory, technical, program-related or broad cross sector issues and information to assess the impact of a policy and/or strategic plan on an organization. Preference may be given to applicants with this experience in the areas of water resource or natural resource management.
  • Experience establishing, building, and maintaining collaborative working relationships with Indigenous groups, internal managers and staff, external groups and/or other levels of government for the purposes of education, training, developing and/or implementing policy.
  • Experience producing complex and written documentation for senior decision-makers.
