This position is a one-year term Hydrology Research Technician position, with potential for extension, working on an oil sands end pit lake research project funded for five years.
The primary job duties for the Research Technician (Professional Level A) will include assisting in the design and implementation of a field monitoring plan to evaluate the hydrology and hydrometeorology of an end pit lake within a post-mining setting in an oil sands mining facility north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. This position will involve extensive logistics (e.g., equipment procurement; Environment, Health and Safety Requirements) and fieldwork during the spring and summer seasons, and meticulous data management, analyses and reporting during the fall and winter seasons. The incumbent will function as a liaison between our University research team and the Industry partners.
Qualifications
- M.Sc. Degree in Science or Engineering (preferred) or an Honours Undergraduate Degree in Physical Geography or Environmental Science with a minimum of two years of relevant work/field experience, with an emphasis in hydrology and/or hydroclimatology;
- Hydrology, micrometeorology, biogeochemistry field research experience is essential;
- Experience managing hydrological and meteorological datasets and proficiencies with database organization and maintenance;
- Excellent analytical and computer skills (proficiency in GIS and statistical computing and graphics software is an asset);
- Experience in writing technical and progress reports;
- Excellent communication skills (demonstrated by oral and poster presentations);
- Keen interest in writing scientific publications an asset;
- Work experience and understanding that incorporates multi-disciplinary projects in hydrology, water budgets, chemistry, ecology, and boundary layer climatology;
- Experience working in a research environment requiring a firm understanding of hydrology and meteorology concepts and processes;
- Experience working in an environmental management/planning or mining environment is an asset;
- Familiar with snow, snowmelt and topographic surveys; surveying experience an asset;
- Basic knowledge of soil science;
- Experience training and supervising junior staff is an asset;
- Driving required, a class 5 license is mandatory.
