Job Description

We are currently seeking a new Data Analyst for our Climate Policy Team based in Berlin. Your responsibilities include:

  • Use and extend existing software and modelling tools in order to provide quantitative analyses of national and sectoral emissions pathways consistent with the Paris Agreement.
  • Support policy analysts, modelers, and economists in the collection and analysis of varied and transdisciplinary datasets.
  • Assist in the developing of tools and software to enhance the quantitative analyses and modelling critical to the core work of the team.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of a commonly used data warehouse.
  • Provide key analytical support in tracking climate action, quantifying science-related benchmarks for 1.5° implementation, and supporting NDC enhancement.
  • Provide analytical support for negotiators from vulnerable countries.
  • Contribute to the writing of reports, briefings, and scientific peer-reviewed publications.

Your Profile

You will ideally have the following qualifications and skills:

  • At minimum an undergraduate degree with at least 3 years relevant work experience in a quantitative discipline with applied scientific software development and data analysis experience.
  • Proven programming skills in Python with knowledge common programming approaches (separation of concerns, object-oriented programming, design patterns, etc.). Working knowledge of R, Matlab, and Excel is an asset.
  • Experience in working in collaborative coding environments with multiple team members
  • Experience with the scientific software stack, including – Version control (git) – Testing (unit tests, regression tests, etc.) – Automated documentation – Databases (SQL-based, NetCDF/HDF5, MongoDB, etc.)
  • An interest in understanding and addressing international, regional, national and sub-national challenges to climate change mitigation.
  • A background in energy systems, mitigation, climate science, or economics is an asset.
  • Excellent English writing and verbal skills. Basic German skills are welcome, but not required, other language skills are an asset.
  • A well-developed sense for team work and ability to interact with a diverse array of people.
