The Department of Geoscience (DG), Aarhus University (a top-100 university internationally) in collaboration with the Aarhus University Interdisciplinary Centre for Climate Change (iClimate) and the Department of Physics and Astronomy (DPA) invites applications for a position at the tenure track Assistant Professor/Associate Professor level in Environmental Remote Sensing of Earth and planetary systems to begin on July 1, 2020.
The Research environment
The Department of Geoscience currently employs around 110 staff including faculty, externally funded researchers, post-docs, Ph.D. students, and administrative and technical staff. DG has a strong research profile spanning a broad range of geological and geophysical disciplines including Climate and Environment, Water, Energy and Natural Resources, and Deep Earth Systems. DG has an outstanding research and teaching infrastructure including geochemical, sedimentological and micropalaeontological laboratories, HF-laboratory, a class 100 metal-free clean-laboratory, an XRF core scanner, and TCN dating facilities. The department also participates in iClimate – a multidisciplinary center bridging core-disciplines within the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Technical Sciences.
The position and the candidate
DG together with iClimate and the DPA aims to strengthen research and teaching in the field of climate and environmental changes of the Earth using state-of-the-art remote sensing technologies. Coupled with modern analytical approaches involving machine learning and deep learning, remote sensing constitutes a powerful tool to better understand the fundamentals of Earth surface systems, including the climatically driven changes, and the nearby space environment that defines planetary boundary conditions. In particular, DG seeks a candidate focused on monitoring and analyzing the effects of climate changes on natural and human systems, and their societal relevance.
The successful candidate will have a strong research profile in remote sensing and space science methodologies, machine learning and deep learning, and big data-handling. Knowledge of the geological record of past climate systems and an understanding of climate physics is considered an asset. In addition, the candidate will have a strong record of academic achievements demonstrated by a significant number of original international publications and a documented ability to attract external funding from national and/or international funding agencies. Experience in setting up and leading interdisciplinary working groups is advantageous.
The appointee will have a Ph.D. in a natural science discipline and prior experience in teaching and student supervision at the university level. He/she will teach relevant courses at all levels in geoscientific disciplines at DG and DPA.
The candidate will be responsible for establishing a vibrant research environment in remote sensing at DG in close interdisciplinary collaboration with iClimate and the DPA, and to actively contribute to the ongoing research in Earth surface systems at DG. Cooperation with private industry, engagement in public sector consultancy, generating significant external funding for research, and involvement in public outreach are expected.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
